Edward Marshall Cleland

Edward Marshall Cleland, 91, of Rancho Mirage, Calif., passed away February 12, 2014. Beloved father of Kimberley (John) Owen of Crawley, England; James Marshall (Joan) Cleland of Minnetonka, Minn. and Candace (Tim) West of Huntington Beach, Calif.; loving stepfather to Dorothy (Ramon) Tello and Robert (Iris) Burford; proud grandfather of eight; and great-grandfather of four. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyne Reynolds Cleland; his wife, Margaret Burford Cleland; his sister, Joan Cleland; and his brother, James Vail Cleland. Edward, known as Marshall to family and friends, was born in New Orleans, La. He grew up in the Midwest and moved to Pasadena, Calif., graduating from University High School in Los Angeles, and UCLA. After graduation Marshall enlisted as an officer in the Navy and served in WWII aboard the USS Murray DD556. After the war, he worked for various manufacturers in the aircraft and electronics industries. He was owner of Cleland Enterprises Inc. in Pasadena. He retired to the desert in 2004, after the death of his second wife. Marshall loved to play golf and at Pete Carlson's Golf & Tennis Shop he met his heart's delight, Flora Hardesty, with whom he spent the rest of his life. Marshall will always be remembered for his charm and charisma. To know him was to love him. He lived his life with style and grace, leaving a wealth of precious memories to his family and many friends. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. in the Ramon Chapel at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cathedral City, Calif.
