Eduard Kosin, 87, of Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2023 at Barlow Respiratory Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 17, 1936 in city of Babruysk, Belarus, to Olga Grigoryevna Levina and Mikhail Mikhailovich Kosin.
At the age of 3, Eduard kissed his father good bye. World War II had started, First Lieutenant Mikhail Kosin was called to duty.
A Holocaust survivor, little Eduard escaped from Babruysk with his mother just a day before Nazi captured the city on June 26, 1941. He was only five years old and never forgot how their echelon with evacuees came under bombardment and machine gun fire from fascist aircraft.
Wounded in both legs, but alive, his father returned home in March of 1945. When Eduard turned 11, he welcomed a baby sister into the family. From the moment Svetlana was born to the day she passed, their love and care for each other never faded.
In 1953, Eduard became a champion of the Mogilev region in boxing, in the featherweight category for juniors.
During his military service, he served as a private in the Air Defense Force. On the morning of May 1, 1960, he was monitoring the flight of Francis Gary Powers until the moment the American pilot was shot down by Soviet missiles. Life is full of surprises, isn't it? By coincidence, Eduard and Francis happened to live and die in the City of Angels.
After graduating from Mogilev State Engineering College, Eduard worked at large manufacturing plants throughout his professional career. He started as a process engineer and retired as the head of a department in a design bureau.
In 1965, he moved to Odessa, Ukraine, where he met the love of his life, Zhanna. They got married in December 1969 and two years later had a baby boy, Yura. They lived happily for 15 years, until Zhanna suddenly passed away in February 1985. Eduard never remarried.
In 1997, Eduard moved to Los Angeles with the help of sister Svetlana and the International Rescue Committee. He was so happy and delighted to start his life from scratch one more time.
He was a loving father and grandfather. He was always there for his family and loved spending time with them. He enjoyed playing billiards, painting sunsets, reading books and drawing portraits. He always found the right words to cheer you up.
He loved and supported Ukraine, and he couldn't wait to celebrate its victory.
Eduard will be deeply missed by his son Yuriy and daughter-in-law Tatyana, his grandchildren Mikhail and Anastasiya, his nephew Val, and his many friends and relatives.
A memorial service will be held on June 1st at 9:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn, Old North Church (red chapel), Hollywood Hills, CA.
My every step is filled with faith. No matter how much you have to fight, no matter what the new battle or the enemy,
if you believe, you will not think of giving up.
Our goal is to be afloat every moment... And, illuminated by the sky's mountain light, I BELIEVE and therefore I LIVE!!!
What else do we need in this world...
