Edna Jean Gibbens passed away peacefully at 4:21 AM on November 6, 2015 (Friday early morning) at Kaiser Permanente hospital in Downey, CA after sustained injury from the result of an auto-ped (automobile-pedestrian) accident on Halloween Day on October 31, 2015 (Saturday morning) at 7:24 AM near at her home in Lynwood, CA.
Mom Gibbens was born January 12, 1936 in Huntington, West Virginia to William "Bill" Kaiser and Gladys Virginia Bennett. Mom was very lucky to be rescued from the terrible 1936 Wheeling Flood when she was 2 months old. Both parents were unfortunately deceased from the Flood. Grandparents (James Elliott Bennett and Minnie Pearl Gillispie) legally adopted her. Mom received her high school diploma in 1953 from West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind in Romney, WV. Mom married to the love of her life, Harry Gibbens, in 1960 and then moved westbound across the country to Huntington Park, CA for a very short time (3 months). Finally, she settled in Lynwood, CA to become a lifelong resident. Mom was an environment conscious by collecting recyclable bottles to keep the city beautified and donated them to a worthy cause. Mom was an expert of recognizing almost all of the Hollywood movie stars. Mom was a great supporter in the city political activities by attending countless City Council meetings. Mom was an avid camper and love to attend summer Utah Deaf Women's Camp at Camp Wapiti near Tooele, Utah in every 2 years. Mom is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in several calling capacities.
Mom Gibbens is survived by her husband, Harry Gibbens, Sr. (CA) and her children: Harry Gibbens, Jr. (UT), Caroline Campbell (ID), and Samuel (Stefanie) Gibbens (CO), and two grandchildren (Carley Gibbens (CO) and James Gibbens (CO)). Mom was preceded in death by two infants (Creighton in 1964 and James in 1971).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Torrance 4th ASL Branch), 2000 W. Artesia Blvd., Torrance, CA 90504.
