Edie Lee Alexander was born in Monticello, Georgia; the only child of William and Mattie Alexander. At the age of three, Edie's family moved to Santa Monica, California. She attended elementary school and high school in Santa Monica and was a member of First A.M.E Church by the Sea where she was baptized. At Santa Monica High School, Edie received varsity letters in tennis, track and field.
A few years after graduating from high school, Edie worked for the Veterans Administration in Westwood. At that time, she attended classes at California State University, Northridge and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and obtained a teaching credential. During this time, Edie met the love of her life: Albert Lee Walker; they were married in 1950.
Edie then started her career in education. She began teaching at Vaughn Street Elementary School in Pacoima, California. In 1959, daughter Karen Leigh entered the family. Shortly thereafter, Edie returned to California State University, Northridge earning a Master's Degree in Education and obtained an administrative credential. During her over 25 years in elementary education, Edie taught at Lanai Road School in Encino, California and Dixie Canyon School in Sherman Oaks, California. Along with her teaching duties at these schools, Edie trained new teachers, served as a curriculum specialist, in-service leader and Assistant Principal.
Edie and Albert joined Church of Divine Guidance, a non-denominational church in Los Angeles. She was a member for over 50 years and served on its board of directors as a trustee.
After retiring from teaching, Edie pursued charitable interests. She was the founding member and only elected President of The Original Ladies, an organization that educationally sponsored children worldwide for over 25 years. She was a member of the graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in Century City for five years and then assumed inactive status. In 1986, Edie was inducted as a member into the San Fernando Valley Chapter Links, Incorporated. She went on alumni status shortly before her illness. Edie was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma-Xi Chapter, an organization comprised of educators for many years until she became ill.
Edie "Mickie" Walker's family, friendships, educational career, and her commitment to service were hallmarks of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee Walker; parents William Alexander and Mattie Dumas Collins; step-father Howard A. Collins; aunts Elizabeth Huguley, Dorothy Murden and Mary Scott; uncles Edward Huguley, Cecil Murden, Al Dumas; and precious grandson Rodolfo Alexander Meniku. Edie is survived by her devoted daughter Karen Walker Meniku; son-in-law Dino Meniku; cousins Beverly Mosley, Nikona Mosley, La Del Scott, Michelle Scott, April Scott and a host of family and close friends.
