Atkinson, NH: Douglas R. Hubbell, 75, a resident of Atkinson since 1970, died on September 3, 2014 peacefully at home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Waltham, MA, and raised and educated in Belmont, MA, son of the late Thaddeus Hubbell and Phyllis (Lees) (Hubbell) Alger, and step-son of the late
Lawrence Alger, he graduated from Belmont High School with the class of 1957, where he played goalie for the Varsity Hockey Team. He also played as a goalie in the Greater Boston League. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1964 from Plymouth State College and later a Master's Degree in School Administration from Riviere College.
Mr. Hubbell was employed first as a teacher in the Atlantic City School System. He had also been employed by the Absecon, NJ Police Department and as a Dispatcher for Galloway Township before moving back to the area in 1970. As a career educator, he was employed as a teacher for the Timberlane Regional Jr. High School from 1970-1974, a teacher, Assistant Principal and Head of the Social Studies Department at the Hood Memorial School in Derry from 1974-1990 and lastly, as Principal for the Alstead Attendance Area of the Fall Mountain Regional School District from 1991 until his retirement in 1995. His greatest joy was knowing that, through education, he affected and influenced the lives of young people and helped to improve the working conditions and benefits effecting the professionals with whom he worked.
A former member of the State of New Hampshire Representative Council, Mr. Hubbell was also the Chairman of the budget committee for the New Hampshire Education Association and was the New Hampshire State representative to the National Education Association Convention in Atlantic City in 1971 and again in Portland Oregon in 1973. Additionally, he was the building representative for the Atlantic City Education Association, Chairman of the Staff Development Committee and a member of the Social Studies Curriculum Development Committee. In the early 1970's, Mr. Hubbell was President of the Timberlane Regional Education Association, which held the longest strike in United States History which is still officially unsettled. He was past President of the Timberlane Youth Football Association and had served as a former Cub Scout Master of Pack 95, Atkinson. He also coached the Atkinson Men's Softball Team which played in the Haverhill Senior League.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy J. (Pike) Hubbell in 2011, and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Albina Hubbell of Atkinson, NH, a daughter, Susan Hubbell of Maine, a brother, Richard Hubbell of South Dennis, MA, a sister, Phyllis (Alger) Whitney of Barnstead, NH, his companion, Nancy Brazee of Danville, NH, five grandchildren, Chase, Devyn, Robert, Tabitha, and Megan, and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Virginia Hubbell in 2003, and his brother, Thaddeus Hubbell.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Atkinson Congregational Church, 101 Main Street, Atkinson, NH. Burial will follow in Atkinson Cemetery.
