Dorothy Dee Stone

March 12, 1936 — February 8, 2018

Dorothy Stone lived a full life and passed away peacefully at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, CA with her 2 daughters faithfully by her side on 2/8/18. She was born 3/12/36 at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Dorothy, known as DD to her close friends, & Dottie to some of her relatives, was raised in San Marino where she spent most of her life. She was the only daughter of John Vernon Vaughn & Dorothy May Vaughn of San Marino. She graduated from South Pasadena High School in 1954, before San Marino High School was in existence; attended Stephen's College in Missouri for undergrad studies, until she became homesick & transferred to USC to complete her Bachelor's Degree in English. DD met the love of her life while attending her sorority mixer (Alpha Chi Omega) with Dick's fraternity (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) & they were "pinned" very quickly. Dick referred to DD as his "princess" & she called him her "prince". When asked what her favorite memory was recently, she said it was the day she married Richard. Her sweetheart lost his battle with an aggressive lymphoma on 11/11/17 & Dorothy received the exact same diagnosis 2 months later, which some say must have been true love. They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on 7/26/18. DD is survived by her only brother, Spencer Vaughn and her two daughters, Teri Stone and Kim Castro & husband Steve, & grandchildren, Patrick, Whitney & Connor Castro.

Dorothy especially loved Kahana Sunset on Maui, where the family spent many summers, along with winters in Mammoth, as their girls went through school. Although DD couldn't ski after earlier injuries, she made the long drive to Mammoth every other weekend to take care of her family, make all the meals, entertain friends & keep the household clean & inviting while everyone else skied. Her fondest memories were in Hawaii with Dick & the girls, along with many friends they made while there. Their 50th anniversary highlight was a cruise to Alaska.

Dorothy's most treasured place was her home, which was impeccably decorated & where she enjoyed hosting family & friends. She loved to decorate, set a beautiful table, & create new & exciting meals, whether she tried recipes from a cooking show, radio program, or her many cookbooks & magazines. Manners were extremely important to Dorothy, along with a traditional & conservative lifestyle. DD spent her later years taking care of her father first, & then another 13 years devoted to her mother almost daily to the age of 103 & a half. Once DD's parents passed on, she could finally focus on Dick & build an even closer 2nd love story with him. She was an extremely devoted daughter, wife & mother.

Special thanks go to James Shen, MD from City of Hope who diagnosed Dorothy quickly, provided excellent treatment, comfort & hope, until an unexpected stroke took Dorothy's life unexpectedly on her last day.

DD is now reunited with her forever valentine, Richard, and is playing dominoes for 4 with her parents, while having pupu's, drinks & a delicious meal. Aloha Mom!
