Dorothy Porter, affectionately known as Dee, passed away unexpectedly on February 26, 2025, in Culver City, California. Born on April 27, 1947, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dorothy graced the world with her unforgettable and exceptional personality. She lived a life defined by her unwavering commitment to her family and friends.
Dorothy dedicated more than 50 years of her life to the Los Angeles Unified School District, where she began her career at the young age of 18. Her devotion to education and the well-being of the staff, students, and families was evident. She continued to return to the district as a substitute School Administrative Assistant (SAA) even after her retirement in 2005. Throughout her years of service, she established a reputation as a business savvy, kind-hearted and patient individual who took pride in fostering a nurturing environment for all.
A proud and loving mother, grandmother, and sister, Dorothy is survived by her beloved daughter Jina (husband Christopher Hughes, Sr), her nurturing mother Girtha Williams, and cherished sister Debra Williams. In addition, her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Christopher Hughes, Jr (wife Darylina), Tyler Hughes, Chaysen Hughes, as well as her great-granddaughter Celine Hughes (daughter of Christopher Hughes, Jr.). Dorothy also leaves behind a close-knit family that includes niece Danielle Curley, grand-nephew King Cody Langaigne, cousins Raquel Jackson, Tamika Brown, and Tiffany Brown, children by marriage Joycelyn McDonald (husband Donovan), Jimmy Porter, Jr., Jana Anderson (husband Howard), grandchildren through Jimmy Porter, Jr.: Tyana Porter, Jaahmaz Porter, Jayden Porter, Kaia Porter, and great-grandson Ethan Porter (son of Jayden).
Beyond her professional and family achievements, Dee was a woman of many interests. Her passion for travel led her to the beautiful Caribbean, with particularly fond memories of visiting the Bahamas and Jamaica. Dorothy was also known for her incredible cooking skills, her love for reading, and a penchant for shopping. She cherished the simple pleasures of life, such as taking walks for exercise, and always approached each day with grace and joy.
Dorothy's personality was a beautiful tapestry woven from kindness, loyalty, and an infectious sense of humor. She was a woman who uplifted others, providing support and encouragement to those around her while maintaining her independence. Her generous spirit and compassionate nature allowed her to forge connections with everyone she met, leaving a lasting impact on her community and family.
The visitation for Dorothy will be held on March 20, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills, located at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068. A Celebration of Life service will follow on March 21, 2025, beginning at 2:30 PM at the same location, within the Old North Church.
Dorothy Porter will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her enduring legacy of love, community, and laughter will continue to inspire and comfort those who carry her memory forward.
** Note: The burial will take place after the service in a grassy area across from the Old North Church. There is a bit of a downslope when accessing the site. Please be aware that high heels may cause a challenge when accessing this area.
