Dorothy Elizabeth Barnes

Dorothy Elizabeth Barnes, loving wife, aunt, friend, U.S. Marine and former Willoughby, Ohio resident passed away in Palm Springs, California on 10 Aug 2020 at the age of 95.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on 20 Mar 1925 to William Kragel and Julia Elek, she was raised in Willoughby by Julia and step-father Henry A. Boersig. A graduate of Union High School, she served in the U.S. Marine Corps Womens Reserve as WWII came to an end. On 24 Apr 1948 she married the late Vernon Dale Barnes. They remained loving companions and adventurers for over 53 years until his death in 2001. Visiting them at their home in Willoughby Hills and exploring the property was the highlight of summer for all the nieces and nephews. Following 5 years with Ohio Bell, Dottie was employed for 30 years with Cleveland Trust in Willoughby where she received numerous awards during her years of service. Before retiring to Palm Springs in 1977, she and Vernon owned Barnes Seed and Pet Supply in downtown Willoughby. Tenacious and intelligent, Dorthy was an outstanding business associate as well as an exceptional hunter, keen golfer and avid outdoor enthusiast.

Never without a four legged friend, she will be missed dearly by Dolly - her Boston Terrier & sidekick as Dottie struggled with blindness in recent years. The last of her generation, Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, husband as well as her brother Henry G. Boersig.
