Dorm Taylor June 20, 1930- March 7, 2013
Dorman Dean Taylor passed away on March 7, 2013 after spending an evening surrounded by many of his children and grandchildren. Quick onset of lung cancer, and complications of emphysema brought on a brief but mighty battle. Born in Leola, Arkansas on June 20, 1930 to Karma and Roy Taylor, after Edith and Fran and followed by Roy Neal, Dorm grew up in the Depression and learned well when to pinch a penny and when to spend freely.
He was an accomplished athlete at Omak H.S. and graduated in 1948. Dorm served in the U.S. Navy and worked his way through U. of W. graduating in 1959, B.S. Civil Engineering. During his college years he worked as a carpenter building houses. Additionally, he spent some years building Grand Coulee Dam. He married Colleen Scholz on December 11, 1954. They raised five children, Dormaleen (Dorrie), Harold (Hank), Karen, Tracy, and Marcy. Dorm excelled in his career, he worked building highways, freeways, and bridges. One of our many memories was of being allowed to color in project blueprints. He made us feel like our contributions were important. Later Dorm served on the Civil Engineering Advisory Committee for Orange Coast College, was a member of the Carpentry Advisory Committee at the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as a 54 year member of the Elks. With the unrelenting support of his wife and sincere resolve , Dorm overcame alcoholism and served in his local chapter for about thirty years, touching the lives of, and sponsoring many. He was a dedicated volunteer in Little League for many years as well.
Dorm's playfulness insured that his children and grandchildren would enjoy his attention. He taught them jigs, limericks, songs, numerous tricks and anecdotes. However, he also instilled a great sense of patriotism, high morals, strong work ethic and a deep love of family.
Dorm was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roy Taylor, his wife Colleen, and son Hank. He is survived by his loving children Dorrie and Dan Skadal, Denise Taylor, Karen and John Dennison, Tracy and Pam Taylor, Marcy and John Ayers, as well as twelve doting grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
If you would like to make a charitable donation, we ask that you leave a little extra in the tithing plate of your choice in honor of Dorm.
