Doris Marie Johnson

July 14, 1929 — February 14, 2019

Doris Marie Jones, 89, was born on July 14, 1929, in Aurora, Missouri. She was the eldest daughter of Lucille and Charles Melton Jones and sister to Bill, Bobby, Kenneth, Paul, Marlene, and Linda. She loved her siblings dearly, always looking out for their welfare throughout her life.
The family moved west when she was 14 years old, settling in Compton, CA. Doris graduated from Compton HS at age 16, joining the workforce to help with family finances. She met Dallas Johnson on New Year's Eve 1948 in Long Beach, CA. Dallas hailed from Everly, IA, was a sailor in the US Navy, and was smitten. On June 25, 1950 they were married in Honolulu, HI where Dallas was stationed. They would return to California two years later when Dallas was discharged.
The couple purchased their first home in Norwalk, CA in 1954. In January 1955 their daughter Terri was born, followed by son Kevin in April of 1959. After the birth of her children, Doris was a stay-at-home Mom and homemaker. In March 1987 she became a proud Grandma to her first grandchild Kyle who lovingly called her "Gunga." In December 1988 her granddaughter Karissa arrived and Doris was renamed "Bata." Grandchild number three, Loren Kay, arrived in November 1996. Doris loved them dearly, did her very best to spoil them rotten, and enjoyed every minute of it.
Doris will be remembered by many for her kindness. She "mothered" everyone from nieces and nephews to neighbor children. Treats and toys were scarce during her childhood, so she was quick to distribute candy, cookies, and gifts to little ones. The neighbor kids often waited for her to return from the market and candy was distributed from the car's trunk;)
This June, Doris and Dallas would have celebrated 69 years together, but her health issues became overwhelming. She fought a valiant fight after suffering a bad fall and hip fracture, then passed away on Valentine's Day. She will be sorely missed.
