Danville, NH: Donald A. Hamel,67, died Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Concord Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born in Haverhill, MA, son of the late Samuel Hamel and the late Mary (DesFosses) (Hamel) Amicucci, he was raised in Haverhill and Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 and served as a Petty Officer First Class Submariner aboard the USS Gato (SSN-615) and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Hamel earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Biology from Salem State College. He first worked in the City Engineer's Office for the City of Haverhill for several years and later worked in the same capacity for the Town of Danvers. From 1988 until his retirement in October of 2012, he was employed as the Collection System Manager at the wastewater treatment plant for the Town of Merrimack, NH. He also served as the person in charge of the computer networking for the plant.

Mr. Hamel was a member of the New Hampshire Water Pollution Control Association and The Water Environment Federation. He attended Saint Anne's Church in Hampstead and enjoyed rebuilding antique clocks and radios. He also enjoyed making his own repairs in his home and on his auto and had a keen and varied interest in politics and government. He was very devoted to his wife and children and was looking forward to the upcoming birth of his first grandchild.

Recognized for his expertise in the field of Information Technology, Mr. Hamel enjoyed helping his family, friends, and co-workers, as well as church groups and other organizations with their computer problems.

He is survived by his wife of forty years, Belinda (Martineau) Hamel, his son Eric D. Hamel of Fairfax, VA, and sons and daughters-in-law, Ryan M. and Sarah Hamel and Mark A. and Elizabeth Hamel, all of Brookline, NH, a sister, Shirley Webster of Haverhill and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Arlene Hamel.

Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday August 6, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 am from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in Saint Anne's Church, Emerson Avenue, Hampstead, NH. Burial with Military Honors will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the State Veteran's Cemetery, Boscawen. The family requests that memorial donations be made to: The ALS Association of Northern New England, 10 Ferry St., Concord, NH 03301 or to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
