Don Harper Mills

Don Harper Mills, MD, JD, born on July 29, 1927, in Peking, China, passed away May 21, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Don spent his childhood through young adult life in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving to California in 1953. He resided in Long Beach with his beloved wife, Lillian, at the time of his passing.

He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Cincinnati and his law degree from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Mills taught at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where he was a clinical Professor of Pathology as well as a clinical Professor of Psychiatry. He was a physician and a lawyer, practicing as the Medical Director of the County of Los Angeles Medical Malpractice Program, devoted to claims management for the public hospitals and clinics in that county.

He was past president of Salerni Collegium, a Fellow and past president of the American College of Legal Medicine, and a Distinguished Fellow and past president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He participated in the development of the Academy's Code of Ethics and was chairman of the Ethics Committee for many years.

Dr. Mills wrote extensively in the medical-legal field and was currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Legal Medicine. He was on the first editorial board of the Journal of the American Medical Association in the 1970s.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lillian, and his children, Frances and Jon, and their spouses, Philip and Nancy. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Philip III, Julia, Amanda and Kyle.
