Diane Appling

February 10, 1942 — March 20, 2026

Diane Appling, a cherished matriarch and devoted wife, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, in her home in Cypress, California, following a courageous battle with Dementia. Born on February 10, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, Diane’s life was marked by an unwavering devotion to her family, community, and the simple joys that knit her loved ones together.

Diane was a beloved partner to her late husband, Dave Appling, with whom she shared more than 66 years of marriage. Their partnership was a cornerstone of their family’s legacy, as Diane helped her husband run their family insurance agency for over 25 years. Together, they built not only a successful business but a warm and nurturing home filled with love and laughter.  They traveled as much as they could and always found their peaceful place houseboating at Lake Powell, Utah.

A graduate of Dominguez High School in Compton, California, Diane was known widely as a sweet, loving person with a giving heart. Her generosity extended beyond her professional life into the community and especially to her family. One of the most enduring memories loved ones hold dear is the “Santa Party” Diane hosted when her grandchildren were young. Affectionately referred to by family and friends alike as a “Grandparents party,” this festive occasion brought together as many as 40 children, including neighborhood kids and family friends. Diane took great care to purchase and wrap personal gifts for each child, creating a magical experience complete with food, candy, presents and Holiday drinks for the adults—all warmly enjoyed when Santa visited their home in Los Alamitos. This tradition remains a testament to Diane’s warmth and thoughtfulness.

Diane’s pride in her family knew no bounds. She leaves behind her younger sister, Cheryl Johnson, and a venerable aunt, Connie Youngren, who at 103 years old remains a vibrant part of the family fabric. Diane’s beloved sons—Donny, Darren, and David Jr.—along with their spouses Shelli, Julie, and Mike, carry forward her legacy. She was a devoted grandmother to Cody, Cory, Jessica, Jake, and Jennifer, and spouses also remain close to the family circle. Diane’s heart swelled with joy as a great-grandmother to Allie, Greyson, Griffin, Luke, and Reagan.  She so enjoyed spending time with her neices and families watching them grow. Celebrating the growth of what began as a family of five into The Appling Family of 22 by year 2024; was among her proudest accomplishments.

The loss of Diane so soon after her husband’s passing is deeply mourned, and the void left by her departure will be profoundly felt by all who knew her. She was a gentle soul whose kindness and generosity touched countless lives. Diane Appling’s enduring spirit and the loving bonds she nurtured ensure that her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

Her life stands as a tribute to enduring love, family devotion, and heartfelt generosity. Diane will be terribly missed but forever remembered for the remarkable woman she was.
