Derrick Jerome Green was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA to Stephanie Green and James Avery. Derrick was an extremely athletic and intelligent child, participating in every sport he could get into. He attended Banning High School in Wilmington, CA where he was an offensive lineman,#73, on the football team and made the most of his time with the class of 1983 (Go Pilots!). Derrick then committed to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to pursue his education and to continue his collegiate football career. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.
Derrick began his career as a Probation Officer with the County of Los Angeles. He continued his career as a Deputy Probation Officer and finished his career as Supervisor, Deputy Probation Officer at Los Angeles County probation Camp Rockey. Derrick enjoyed developing young Deputy Probation Officers in addition to enhancing the lives of countless at-risk juveniles who grew to respect and admire him. He recently retired after an incredible and rewarding 34 year career with the Los Angeles County Probation Department.
Derrick was not one to skip a good time. He loved to play dominoes and hosted weekly smackdowns in his garage. His favorite place to travel was Las Vegas to visit family, play blackjack and visit casinos. Football was not only a hobby, but a way of life for Derrick. He was a lifelong Raiders fan who stayed loyal to his team.
Derrick was an exceptional and devoted father to his two children, Erin and Alex. He served as an exemplary role model to all who were fortunate enough to spend time with him, and his legacy endures through the success of his children. Derrick touched the lives of those he encountered, serving as an inspiration to many. Derrick was man of God and his faith never wavered, even in the face 0f adversity. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
On April 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer, Derrick went to be with the Lord. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Tracey, his son, Alex, daughter, Erin, his sisters, Keshia, Kemya and Naima, and younger brother, James.
Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, CA.
