Derek Alan Phillips, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 8, 2024, in Laguna Hills, California, at the age of 63. Born on August 13, 1961, in Long Beach, California, Derek was known for his gentle spirit and commitment to those he loved.
Throughout his life, Derek maintained a steadfast and humble approach, never one to boast about his accomplishments. His notable career spanned over two decades in private security, concluding with his role at G4S Secure Solutions. Before this, he was a loyal employee at several companies, including Fedco and Turner's Sporting Goods. Derek's devotion to his work was matched only by his dedication to his family and friends.
Derek’s education was important to him, having graduated from Jordan High School in 1979, and later earning an associate degree in Fire Science from Long Beach City College in 1985. While he was a private person, maintaining an air of mystery around his personal life, he possessed an innate ability to engage with those around him. Derek particularly cherished the time he could share conversations with complete strangers, often leaving a lasting impression with his kindness and friendly demeanor.
He loved life’s simple joys: nature held a special place in his heart, and he often reminisced about childhood camping trips to beautiful destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Zion. These memories ignited a passion for the outdoors that he maintained into adulthood. An enthusiastic lover of hobbies, Derek found solace in deep-sea and freshwater fishing, a passion that connected him with nature. He delighted in coin collecting, studying California history—especially the Gold Rush era—and enjoyed metal detecting along the beautiful beaches of Southern California. His love of air shows, car racing and train rides became another cherished pursuit that brought him joy.
Derek often expressed pride in his family, particularly in his nephews. He fondly remembered the stories shared of his father, Dean, who served during the Korean conflict, which stirred a profound sense of patriotism in him. Derek also cherished his Dutch heritage, though it saddened him that many of his extended family had moved away from the area.
Derek's connection with Alicia deepened during his battle with cancer, he treasured the opportunity to create lasting memories with her. Together, they shared wonderful moments at Irvine Park, Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, Sherman Gardens, and even celebrated his 63rd birthday at Disneyland.
Derek is survived by his sister, Alicia Hoover; brother-in-law, Tony Hoover; and his nephews, Eric Hoover, Kevin Hoover and wife Mikayla, with their son Atlas, and Scott Hoover. He was preceded in death by his father, Dean Phillips, and mother, Peggy (Pietje) Phillips.
His interment service will be held crypt side on December 18, 2024, at 2:30 PM at Forest Lawn, Cypress, located at 4471 Lincoln Avenue, Cypress, California, 90630. Please no flowers or donations.
Derek Alan Phillips leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, and a commitment to being a good human being. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will forever hold a cherished place in the hearts of his family and friends.
