David Thergood, a man whose life was marked by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community, passed away on May 9, 2026, in Anaheim, California. Born on June 5, 1947, in Huntsville, he journeyed through a remarkable life that touched many hearts and left an enduring legacy.
David’s story was one of remarkable perseverance. David accepted Christ at a early age, under Pastorialship of his Father Elder J.L.Thergood and his mother Evangelist Rozetta Houston Thergood. Emerging from humble beginnings, he achieved what many deemed impossible—he built an empire of generational wealth at a time when opportunities were scarce, particularly for African-Americans in the 1960s and 70s. His journey was not only a personal triumph but a beacon of hope and strength for those who followed.
An honest, fair, and no-nonsense man, David was known for his willingness to help others while maintaining firm boundaries. These traits guided him through his varied career paths. He served honorably as a Sergeant in the Air Force, showing valor and commitment to his country. After his military service, he continued to serve his community as a firefighter and paramedic, roles that underscored his bravery and compassion. Later, leveraging his sharp business acumen—which he honed with a Master’s degree in Business from UCLA—he thrived in real estate and investing, building a financial legacy that would benefit generations to come.
David's life was also enriched by the simple joys he cherished deeply. He was a passionate sports fan, especially devoted to watching his beloved Lakers. His enthusiasm for playing blackjack was carried out with equal passion, revealing a spirited and strategic mind. But above all he loved his beloved his son David Jr. and grand sons Marshall Thergood and David Thergood III—with a heart full of pride and affection.
His personal life was marked by a profound love and partnership with his wife, Maria Naranjo, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a family anchored by strong values and mutual respect. He is lovingly remembered and survived by his son, David Thergood Jr., and his grandsons, Marshall and David III, who continue to carry forward the legacy of a remarkable father and grandfather
As we remember David Thergood, we honor a man who was more than his accomplishments. He was a steadfast pillar, a compassionate soul, and a loving family man. His legacy is woven into the fabric of those who knew him and the countless lives he influenced. Though he has passed, his spirit endures in the stories shared, the lessons imparted, and the love he gave so freely.
He is survived by his son, David Thergood Jr, grand sons Marshall and David III ,brothers Stanford Thergood(wife) Janet, Gene Thergood (wife) Ely, Joe Thergood (wife) Wanda, Cleofus Thergood (wife) Bertha. His brother Arthur Thergood preceded him in death. He is survived by two (2) sisters Mary Louise Thergood and Ruthie Adams (Kenneth) (deceased).
