David Hempstead, 83, passed away on June 8, 2026, in Clovis, California. He had recently moved to Clovis so his younger family members could be greater support for him.
He was born in South Bend, Indiana, in 1942, and moved to Granada Hills, California, as a teenager. David pursued his passion for music at UCLA and California State University, Northridge, where he completed his degree in music.
David was drafted into the military during the Vietnam War and proudly served in the military band, traveling throughout Southeast Asia during his service. After returning home, he worked for several years at TRW before transitioning to Hempstead Originals, a candle manufacturing company, in the 1970s. He spent the majority of his work years at Fred Bock Publishing Company, combining his love of music, church hymns, and his commitment to his Faith.
A gifted musician, David dedicated much of his life to music. He worked as a piano teacher, helping young musicians build a strong foundation and inspiring in them a lifelong love of music. He cherished his time at Fred Bock Publishing, a highly respected leader in church music, as it allowed him to have the things he held most dear together in one place.
David was a devoted member of Hollywood Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir for many years. He was also a member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Music remained at the center of his life, bringing him joy, purpose, and connection with others. His years spent singing in choirs were among his most cherished, providing opportunities to travel the world and remain actively engaged in the musical and Faith community.
Even in his final years, David held close the friendships and memories formed through the choir. During his brief time in Clovis, he became known for his encyclopedic knowledge of hymns and his enduring passion for song.
David is survived by his sister, Beth; his niece, Kimberly; and his nephew, Christopher. He will be remembered for his deep love of music, his gentle spirit, and the lasting impact he had on those who sang alongside him.
