After graduating from Berea High School in 1940, Dave joined the US-Army Air Corp where he rose to the rank of Captain at age 21. Dave was stationed in Knettishall, England with the 388th Bomb Group of the 562nd Bomber Squadron through the end of World War II. Dave went on to earn engineering degrees in 1950 from both Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio, and Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In his senior year at Carnegie Tech, Dave married the love of his life, Shirley Edgar, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in December 1949, with whom he shared his life with until her death in February 2017 after sixty-seven years of marriage.

Dave worked as an engineer for Jack & Heintz Company and Thompson Products in Ohio and Martin Missiles in Colorado before moving his family to Burbank in 1962 to work for Lockheed Aircraft as a senior research engineer specialist where he retired from in 1989. He was a member of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for over fifty-years, a faithful member of Burbank First United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis Club of Burbank.
