David Appling, Sr., a devoted family man, community pillar, and compassionate philanthropist, passed away peacefully at his home in Cypress, California, on March 2, 2026. Born on March 17, 1942, in Culver City, California, David’s life was marked by enduring love, unwavering dedication to his family, and a lifelong commitment to bettering his community.

David’s journey began in Compton, and flourished during his years at Dominguez High School, where he met the love of his life, Diane. Their marriage spanned 66 wonderful years, a testament to their deep bond and shared commitment, both of which were central to David’s life. Just 18 days after Dave’s passing, Diane left this world to join him. Their reunion a profound comfort to those who knew their extraordinary partnership and love story.

In the early years of their marriage, David owned a Texaco gas station. However, devoted fatherhood reshaped his career path. With three boys to raise, he sought a profession that would allow him more time to coach and mentor them in football, basketball, and baseball. This led to the founding of Appling Insurance Services in 1974, a business he passionately operated for nearly five decades until the age of 83.

David's impact extended far beyond his professional life. He was the founder and driving force behind the Finest Annual Trout Invitational Tournament, a beloved non-profit event that combined his love of fishing with his philanthropic spirit. This unique tournament, involving two days of fishing and a day of golf enjoyed by close friends and family, raised substantial funds that were generously donated to causes such as the Los Alamitos Museum, the Ronald McDonald House, Cancer Support organizations, and the American Heart Association. Despite his significant contributions, David remained remarkably humble, a giver who sought no accolades for his generosity.

His community leadership included active membership in the Seal Beach/Los Alamitos/Cypress Rotary Club and numerous other local non-profits. Over the years, David tirelessly raised thousands of dollars supporting educational scholarships, youth initiatives, and high school sports programs. Among his proudest achievements was his commitment to the Los Alamitos Education Foundation, also known as LAEF4Kids, where he worked to enhance technology and educational opportunities for children aged 8 to 18.

David’s favorite pastime was unambiguously time with his family—his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether attending school functions, sporting events, or teaching them all to fish, he found immense joy in nurturing their passions and building strong family bonds.

He is survived by his older sister, Carolyn Hale, of Spokane, Washington, along with extended family throughout California, Colorado, and Tennessee. Though Diane and David have now been reunited, their memory lives on in the hearts of those they touched. His greatest achievements were his three sons and their spouses: Donny (Shelli), Darren (Julie) and David Jr. (Michael), their 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren which made life grand!

David Appling, Sr. faced a long and courageous 25-year battle with cancer with resilience and grace, surrounded by the loving presence of his children in his final moments. His legacy remains one of selflessness, dedication, and profound love for family and community. Those fortunate enough to know him remember a man who not only dreamed but acted tirelessly to turn those dreams into a lasting positive impact.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
