Darleen Ruth Farrell Powars died at home peacefully in her sleep of natural causes on April 3oth, 2017. After fighting a long illness, she is now able to join her Heavenly Father and other predeceased relatives. She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Powars of Long Beach, California, her son Jefferson Powars of Washington Terrace, Utah and her daughter, Eve Bahr of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania.
Darleen met Don while attending the University of Southern California. She graduated from USC and then went on to USC medical school where she graduated and became a specialist in Pediatrics. She went to work for the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center and eventually became nationally known for her work and research in Sickle Cell Anemia and Leukemia in children. She presented her work all over the world.
While Darleen always felt that her work was important, she believed her most important job was as a Wife and Mother. She instilled the desire to learn into her children and she and Don spent as much time with them as possible. Vacations were always family affairs that included camping, water skiing, snow skiing, and sports. The family spent many days at Virginia Country Club playing golf together and Darleen acquired many lifetime friendships as a result.
Darleen and Don spent much time traveling together upon their retirement. They loved their experiences in their motor home and the many trips abroad they were able to take with friends. Their trips to several Olympic games and to world-renowned golf courses are especially memorable.
Darleen and Don also gave Jeff and Eve their testimony of a Heavenly Father and Savior in Jesus Christ. Those beliefs and convictions help ease the loss of a loved one. We are blessed by having had Darleen with us for so long and for the legacy she left behind.
Visitation will be held at the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Long Beach, California on May 11, 2017 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. A family service will be held immediately thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at Donate.lls.org. Thank you.
