Dannie Garces

September 2, 1931 — June 30, 2023

Redlands

Dannie La Merle Garces, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sadly passed away on June 30, 2023, of natural causes. Dannie was the daughter of Mattie Louise and Ernest Lamar Brown, born on September 02, 1931, in Dublin, Georgia. She resided in Redlands, California at the time of her passing. She grew up in La Grange, Georgia and left La Grange to enter nursing school in Atlanta. There she met, and later married a handsome and charming college student, Leonidas (Leon) Garces. Dannie and Leon were married for 56 years. They lived in Fairbanks, Alaska while Leon was serving in the Army. At the same time Dannie held a civil service position with the Army as a telephone operator.

Following Leon’s discharge from the Army in 1956, they returned to Georgia where they lived until 1961. During that time Dannie worked as a telephone operator, and gave birth to their first son, Vicente (Vic) and three years later, their daughter, Glendora (Glendie).  They moved to Santa Monica, California in 1961 and had their third child, Angelino (Geno). Later they moved to Rowland Heights, California, where they lived for over 20 years and raised their family. During those years Dannie worked for the U.S. Post Office, and later as a switchboard operator and sales clerk for the Broadway Department store. Leon’s successful management career in printing ink production led them to move to Tennessee, where their first grandson, Robby Hudson, was born. They later returned to Southern California, living in Alta Loma until Leon retired. Their last move together brought them to Stanwood, Washington where they were able to spend quality family time with Geno and their daughter-in-law Catrena. After Leon passed away in 2010, Dannie moved to Redlands to be close to Glendie and her son-in-law, Bob.

Dannie took great pleasure and pride in raising her children. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends close by and taking road trip vacations to visit those further away. She also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with out-of-town family and friends. Dannie took pleasure in cooking, and true to her southern roots she could make some of the tastiest fried chicken and potato salad on the planet. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband Leon, Dannie was preceded in death by her brother Wendall Brown. She is survived by her youngest brother, Terry Lane Brown; her three children, son Vic (wife, Liza), daughter Glendie (husband, Bob), son Geno (wife, Catrena); her three grandchildren, Robby (wife, Cameron), Madeleine and Carlos Garces; and two great grandchildren, Dylan and Charlotte (Charley) Hudson. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Cypress, California.
