Atkinson, NH: Daniel Charles Schmidt, 90, of Atkinson died on March 9, 2015.
Daniel was born in Buffalo, N.Y., Jan 22, 1925, son of Gina (Morovic) Schmidt and beloved stepson of Wallace Harley. Daniel was the brother of his twin siblings Martha (Schmidt) Coder and Alexander Schmidt (now deceased).
He studied Chemistry at Canisius College, University of Buffalo, and St. Bonaventure. He loved music and played both piano and organ, and sang bass in numerous church choirs. In 1943, he was called to military service in the US Navy as a Sonarman Second Class and later also trained as helmsman. He loved his country and served with honor in WWII in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters.
Daniel's passion was always people which was rooted in his love of God and the joy from that personal relationship. We love because He first loved us.(1 John 4:19). As a result of his passion for people, his career led him into sales in the industrial coatings industry. He began as a sales rep for National Analyin, as a "paint peddler" as he fondly called it. He was ultimately recognized for his management and mentoring skills and was promoted to District Sales Manager, Regional Sales Manager and National Accounts Manager. He also worked for and contributed to numerous corporations and privately held coating technology companies. Through his work ethic and dedication to his family, he was able to put his 3 children through college and his daughter through graduate school. Education was of utmost importance to Dan.
Daniel married Dorothy Mary Kay on October 8, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan and had three children, Jeaneane, Daniel Jr. and Christopher. He and his family lived in 8 different states through the years which reflected his numerous career promotions. He loved to spend time with his wife, family and friends, and loved to travel, entertain, barbecue, golf, swim, watch all sports, and generally talk to anyone and everyone he met. He was a fervent Buffalo Bills football fan and was very proud to be from Buffalo. He was famous for his sense of humor and zest for life. He was a voracious reader, history aficionado, and music lover especially of the Big Band era. He and Dorothy traveled throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and to his mother's native Austria, his favorite trip.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Mary (Kay) Schmidt of Atkinson; a daughter, Jeaneane Tracy of Atkinson and her husband, Paul Clayton; a son, Daniel Charles Schmidt, Jr. of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and his wife Susan Larkin; and his son Christopher Paul of Overland Park, Kansas and his wife Judy Kay; and grandchildren Matthew and Jordan Tracy of Atkinson, and Carolyn and Sarah Schmidt of Overland Park, KS. In addition, Dan has many nieces and nephews in New York and Michigan, and dear friends all over the US who have loved him dearly.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday, March 13 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Atkinson Congregational Church with light fare and refreshments following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Atkinson Congregational Church – General Fund in loving memory of Daniel Schmidt.
