Dan Marlyn Hertz 1928-2026
Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and Friend
Dan Marlyn Hertz, age 97, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of deep love and devotion for his family, faithful service to his country, and a life characterized by curiosity, kindness, humility, and quiet strength.
Dan was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1928, the cherished son of Leonard Marlyn Hertz and Beatrice Ethel (Rice) Hertz. He spent his childhood and formative years in Oshkosh, where he developed the lifelong values of hard work, loyalty, and humility—principles that guided him throughout his life.
Dan graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1946 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison. While there, he became a member of Theta Tau and pursued his passion for science and innovation. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
That same year, Dan married Sharon Lee Carlier of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Soon after, he began serving in the United States Army. During this time, he moved his young family—including his wife and infant son—to California, beginning a new chapter on the West Coast. Their family later grew as they welcomed two more sons.
Dan dedicated much of his professional life to engineering and technological advancement. He began his career with Richfield Oil Corporation in Long Beach, California. In 1966, the company merged with Atlantic Refining Company to form the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). Over the course of nearly three decades with ARCO, Dan worked as a chemical engineer at the Richfield Refinery. A forward-thinking innovator, he helped pioneer early computer software programs designed to assist in refining petroleum—an achievement that reflected both his intellect and his love of solving complex problems.
Even after retiring from ARCO, Dan’s desire to serve and help others never faded. He chose to contribute in a very different but equally meaningful way, working as a phlebotomist at Harbor General–UCLA Medical Center for another ten years. There, his gentle demeanor and caring nature brought comfort to countless patients and colleagues.
In September of 1972, Dan married the love of his later life, Martita Contreras Gubbins of Talca, Chile. Their story began with a blind date that blossomed into a lifetime of devotion. They shared many joyful evenings at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim, celebrating heritage and friendship during lively Oktoberfest gatherings filled with traditional music, laughter, dancing, and beloved German foods. Together they built a beautiful life in Huntington Beach, California. Their marriage was one of deep companionship, laughter, and steadfast love for 54 wonderful years. To Martita, he was affectionately known as “Dancito,” a name that reflected the tenderness they shared.
Several weeks ago, Dan suffered a fall that resulted in a severe head injury. After fighting bravely, he passed from this life into the arms of the Lord, leaving a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Though his absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him, his memory lives on through the family he cherished and the many lives he touched.
Dan will always be remembered for his gentle spirit, thoughtful mind, and unwavering love for his family. He lived a long and meaningful life, and his legacy will continue through the generations that follow.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martita Hertz, and his six children: sons Tim (Jana) Hertz, Steve (Ronda) Hertz, and Bob Hertz; and daughters Patricia Astroza Mikami, Tatianna Major (Steve) Jaworsky, and Mary (Gary) Augustine.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Ryan Hertz, Justin Hertz, Joshua (Bryn) Hertz, Kat (Danayella) Hertz, Chad (Melina) Hertz, Isabel Hertz, Isaac Hertz, Adriene Humble, Alex Major, Julius (Mel) Major, Kevin Mikami, Kyle Mikami, and Austin Augustine; and his treasured great-grandchildren: Hannah, Yorick, and Phineas.
Dan’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
In quiet moments when grief feels heavy, the love of family becomes shelter, and the beauty of treasured memories gently brings comfort to aching hearts.
