Christine, affectionately known as "Polly" and "Mama Chris", was born to Eva Brown and Patrick Edwards on January 13, 1932, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. She graduated from Douglas High School. "Polly" was a favorite child in the Edwards and Brown families as she was blessed with a beautiful spirit and presence. In her youth, she spent a lot of time visiting her uncles and aunts in Oklahoma City and California. "Polly" was regarded as a daughter to Uncle Andy and Aunt Zelma Brown as well as a sister to their children who were double first cousins. She was knowledgeable about family history and was blessed with what seemed to be total recall as she could discuss details of events and conversations, never forgetting anything.
Christine married the love of her life, George Washington. They settled in Los Angeles and started their family with the birth of two children, Victor and Valerie. She started a career working at Max Factor Cosmetics, retiring as a manager. Her second career, she worked for the Compton Police Department which was absorbed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department, from which she also retired in 2000.
Christine loved her family and accepted the responsibility of providing personal care for her husband, mother, uncle and aunt through their illnesses. She was passionately involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren, doing all she could for their success and happiness.
Christine also took an interest in her community and regularly watched the televised Compton City Council meetings. She also enjoyed watching the Lakers basketball games, travelling, visiting family, weekend get-aways and "supporting" the casinos. "Mama Chris" recently took an interest in watching Duke Football games as her grandson, Aaron, is a member of the team.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband George; mother Eva Seals; father Patrick Edwards; brother, Erbie McKinley and granddaughter Vickesha Washington.
Christine/Polly/Mama Chris leaves to cherish her memory her son, Victor; daughter, Vallerie and husband Michael Young of Murrieta, CA; grandsons Christian and Aaron; granddaughter Alexandria; three great grandchildren: Cortez and Corion Green and Emerie Tavares; two double first cousins: former mayor of Houston Texas, Honorable Lee P. Brown and wife Francis; Earl Brown and wife Pam, and many other relatives and friends.
A beloved family member departed this life on January 4th, 2017, but as believers, we know "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"
