Charlie Hicks, born on March 4, 1938, in Millry, Alabama, departed this world on May 12, 2025, in Lakewood, California, after bravely battling illness for seven years. Throughout his health journey, Charlie exemplified strength and resilience, maintaining a positive attitude and a smile that could light up any room.
Charlie's life was defined by his dedication and hard work. For thirty years, he served as a warehouseman for Lucky’s/Albertson’s Grocery, establishing lasting friendships with his coworkers along the way. Known for his sunny disposition and warm personality, he was a gentle soul who never judged nor spoke ill of others. His iconic chuckle and great smile brought joy to those around him, creating a legacy filled with love and laughter.
A proud father and devoted husband, Charlie was married to his beloved wife, Dorothy, for an incredible 57 years. Their bond, strengthened by love, laughter, and mutual respect, is a testament to their commitment and partnership through life's many adventures. He was the cherished father of Kristi Hicks, who carries forward the warmth and compassion instilled in her by her father.
An athlete at heart, Charlie was a basketball star during his time at Koenton High School in Koenton, Alabama. His love for sports continued beyond his school days, as he remained a die-hard fan of the Boston Celtics, LA Dodgers, and LA Rams. He found joy in playing basketball with friends and coworkers and engaged in friendly competition while playing Bocce ball. Weekend afternoons often saw him enjoying spirited games at the park, filled with camaraderie and good conversation.
Charlie was also an avid traveler, relishing the thrill of cross-country driving. He loved to connect with people, often talking on the CB radio under the handle “California Goldfinger.” His sense of humor was unmatched, and his laughter was infectious, becoming a hallmark of his warm-hearted nature.
Charlie is preceded in death by his dear mother, Grace McKenzie; his father, Henry Hicks; and his brother, Jonathan Hicks. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of love, friendship, and resilience, embodied in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
