Charles J. "Charlie" McCarthy, 89, a resident of the town of Atkinson for the last sixty-one years, died on Friday, July 1, 2016, with his family by his side at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House, following a long illness.

Born, raised and educated in Lawrence, MA, son of the late James and Ann (Murphy) McCarthy, he attended Lawrence High School and served as a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy, during W.W.II. He later served in the U.S. Coast Guard for several years.

After working as a layout operator for many years and retiring from Western Electric and A.T.& T Technologies, he went on to serve for thirty-one years on the Atkinson NH Police Department.

Charley enjoyed woodworking, working on vehicle starters and alternators, and was a Ham Radio operator. He also enjoyed being a softball coach for many years.

He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Joan (Butler) McCarthy, a son David J. McCarthy and his companion Jeannette Burns of Sandown, two daughters, Charline A. McCarthy and her companion Gary Grizywacz of Atkinson and Joanne M. Goulette and her husband Christopher of East Hampstead, a brother James McCarthy of Virginia and seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial with military honors in Atkinson Cemetery. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 166 South River Road, #210, Bedford, NH, 03110.
