Charles Edward Downing, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on September 29, 1930, in Nogales, Arizona, Charles was the son of Willis and Luella Downing. He grew up in a faith-centered family, moving often as his father pursued ministry assignments, eventually settling in California in 1941.
A graduate of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, Charles was a talented musician and athlete, playing the French horn and competing in tennis. He continued his education at UCLA and California State University, Long Beach, earning a degree in chemistry.
From 1952 to 1956, Charles served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician during the Korean War, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, and San Francisco. After his service, he married Janice Nadine Powell in 1955, and together they raised three sons: David, John, and Stephen. Charles built a distinguished career as a research engineer, contributing to groundbreaking projects at North American Rockwell (later Boeing), including missile systems and the space shuttle program.
After Janice’s passing in 1994, Charles remained active, earning certification in tax preparation, managing H&R Block offices, and working at the Long Beach Convention Center. He also volunteered at Grace Brethren Church and enjoyed concerts, bridge games, and time with friends and family.
Charles spent his final years at Artesia Christian Home, where he was lovingly cared for and participated in Bible studies, activities, and singing. Even in his later years, he exemplified faith, resilience, and a love for learning.
Charles is survived by his sons, David, John, and Stephen, and extended family and friends. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A celebration of his life will be held on December 5, 2024 @ 2pm. The Branch Church 3445 N. Studebaker Rd. Long Beach Ca.
