Kit, a resident of La Canada for 47 years, passed away peacefully at home with her husband Wally nearby. Born in Glendale, California, Kit was raised both in the California desert community of Inyo-Kern and in the neighborhood of Highland Park, and she graduated from Franklin High School in 1956. During her early teens, Kit was a fashion model for many clothing stores in Highland Park including Peoples Department Store, among others. Kit worked her teenage years as an overseas operator for Bell Telephone and then became the personal secretary for "Hollywood Ten" screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who remained a close family friend for many years after.
She met her husband Wally in Highland Park when she was 16 years old and they were married in 1958. During 1971 and 1972, she went back to Cal State LA to complete her college degree in Anthropology. In 1976, as a graduation present, her husband was able to take her on a trip to Norway, France, Kuwait and Egypt. With her degree in anthropology, she received a special invite to the Pyramids and the Museum of Cairo.
After graduation, Kit started working for the National Weather Institute in La Canada, where she remained employed for 20 years, predicting long range weather forecasts for agriculture, the motion picture industry and for various construction companies. For 34 years Kit was also an active member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary where she obtained the rank of Commander of Flotilla 3-10. She taught courses on weather, navigation, search and rescue techniques and safety o other Coast Guard Auxiliarists and recreational boaters. She went on to perform many patrols in both the Pacific Ocean and on Lake Castaic, and her Flotilla was invited to provide services during hte 1984 Olympic Events held in Los Angeles that year. Kit also found time to volunteer canvasing the neighborhood urging citizens to "get out and vote" during the election season which she truly enjoyed.
Kit is survived by Walter E. Weiss, her husband of 56 years her sister Nancy L. Wallen, a son Walter C. Weiss (known as Chuck) of La Crescenta, a daughter of Suzanne M. Czekay of New York, and two grandsons, Christopher and Andrew Czekay.
Her bright blue eyes, happy smile, personality and support of others will truly be missed.
kit will be honored at a service held March 9-2015 at the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Long Beach with a Memorial Marker Ceremony, an event which gives tribute to those Auxiliarists who have recently passed.
