Carroll Hood

Born in Ross City, California on April 3, 1940, Carroll would be traveling almost from day one. A few days after coming into the world his parents would move to San Jose for his dad’s work. They moved around quite a bit…settling in Mar Vista, Ca where he graduated from Venice High School in 1958. He was followed by brothers Rick Hood & Tom Hood. Carroll found his people and his purpose when he entered the Boy Scouts. He would spend years working his way up the ranks until he earned the title Eagle Scout. He spent his summers in the Sequoias at Wolverton where he was a scout leader. He hiked Mt. Whitney multiple times and loved the outdoors. He even managed to hike up Moro Rock in his late 70s. He attended El Camino Junior College and started working at the Broadway where he met Judith Manns. She was the night manager, but was dating someone else. Carroll eventually went on a date with Judy and the rest is history. They married on July 7, 1963 and went on a honeymoon along PCH. He would fulfill his military duties in the Navy during Vietnam. He would joke that he was simply his ship’s typist. While serving in the Navy, his son, Gregory, was born in 1968. His daughter, Leslie, would be born 2 years later. Carroll finished his college education at Northern Arizona University, gaining his teaching credential. The Hood family relocated from Harbor City, Ca to Cypress, Ca in 1971. During the next three decades Carroll worked as a middle school English teacher in the gifted program. He was an excellent teacher, motivating many of his students with his compassion and commitment. Carroll took many groups of students to the Getty Villa to help them learn Greek Mythology. He designed and facilitated Renaissance Fairs at Dodson Middle School in San Pedro, Ca. He would also make several trips to Washington DC as a chaperone with large groups of students. He had many hobbies including: reading, biking, running, playing tennis, visiting museums and traveling, to name a few. One passion that stuck was the Getty museum as he continued his relationship with them into retirement by volunteering as a docent for student groups. He continued this until he could no longer drive. He traveled whenever he got the opportunity and was always willing to give a history lesson wherever he visited. Carroll lived a full life, was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
