"A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed."

Proverbs 11:25

Booker Taliaferro Chism Jr. will be remembered as a man who charts his own course. He made plenty of stops along his journey through life to laugh, love, and help his family. Those who were blessed to share a life with Booker were encouraged, supported, and honored by a faithful steward of God's grace.

Booker was born on November 5, 1951, in South Central Los Angeles. He was the fourth child of seven siblings. His parents, Booker and Daisy Chism, were originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, they migrated to California for a better life for their family. They found a close-knit community in South Central Los Angeles on 134th Street, where their children could play free, knowing that neighbors would look out for them. Booker could be found playing football in the street, chasing his dog 'Skip.' Booker was known for a sweet and mild temperament, with a sense of humor that would light up a room. It is rumored, he was his father's favorite child, who affectionately introduced him to others as "my boy."

As Booker grew into a young man, he developed a passion for track and field. He attended McKinley Avenue Elementary and Vanguard Middle School with strong academic performance. At Centennial High School, Booker joined the track and field team. He enjoyed the 400 hurdles race. Booker would later share his love of track and field with his own children, his nieces and nephews and grandson Elijah (L.B.J.), who also ran in high school. Booker participated with the team and never missed one of Elijah's track meets.

Booker attended Grambling State University as a young adult. His time in college cemented his commitment to the African American community and his interest in entrepreneurship. His education was followed by a career started at Kaiser Permanente and Southern California Edison. Later, Booker began his entrepreneurial journey in the insurance and financial service sector, becoming Regional Vice President with A.L. Williams Insurance. In his middle career, Booker would later begin his own insurance sales business, Most Choice Insurance Services, as well as real estate endeavors, with love for customer service and supporting his clients.

In 1974, Booker met Beatrice Miller at a card party. They married two years later and had their first child, Talia (Foxy), in 1978. Soon after, they were blessed with twins, Mecca (Momo) and Milan (Jesse). Talia completed college and married, birthing his two grandchildren, Elijah and Asha-Nia. Booker told many that his children and grandchildren were the most important part of his life. His children describe him as a source of continual encouragement and support.

Booker constantly served others as an expression of his faith in Jesus Christ. His father was a minister who encouraged him to share his love of God through caring for others. He attended Prayer Assembly Church of God in Christ as a child and Ephesians Church of God in Christ. He was baptized early and trusted God to help him chart his journey through life. As an adult, he was proud to share with others, that he believed in God's word.

Booker will be missed for his infectious smile and willingness to help others. He has been described as spiritually uplifting, a motivator, and a leader. He enjoyed gospel music, reading scripture, and listening to the word of God. In his last days, he was grateful for spending time with his family over a game of dominos.

Mr. Booker Chism transitioned on October 10, 2022, at the age of 70. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Chism; his children, Talia, Mecca & Milan Chism. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elijah & Asha-Nia Huger. He leaves siblings, Irma, Patricia, Sheila & Clifford Chism.

Booker was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Battle, sister Pearlie B. Cary, niece Crystal & nephew Frederick Stills.

Booker Chism's light will continue to shine on others. His good deeds will continue to bless the lives of his family and friends.
