Billy Wilkie Whitaker, a remarkable individual whose kindness and laughter touched the lives of many, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at Loma Linda VA Hospital. Born on November 5, 1940, in Canton, North Carolina, Billy dedicated himself to a life of service, spending two decades in the US Armed Forces. He earned the rank of Master Sergeant and served with distinction as Chief of Police at Tachikawa Air Force Base in Japan, earning the respect and admiration of those around him.
After his honorable military career, he transitioned to the US Postal Service, contributing another twenty years of service to his community.
Billy was a man of many interests and passions. He loved to gamble, often finding excitement in games of blackjack and poker. He had an affinity for travel, enjoying trips that created lasting memories with his loved ones, particularly their summers spent together in Palm Springs. Family gatherings were filled with warmth as he often cooked beloved holiday dishes, including banana pudding and pecan pie.
Beyond his hobbies, Billy was known for his great sense of humor and deep affection for animals, making him a cherished friend and confidant. He was described as a kind soul and a dependable presence in the lives of those who knew him best.
He is profoundly missed by his family, including his daughter, Michelle Petrosian, son-in-law Fredrick Petrosian, and grandchildren Lilian and Daniel Petrosian. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Rose Whitaker, and his sister, Carie Rhinehart.
Billy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kim Soon Ak Whitaker, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Catherine Whitaker, his brother-in-law, Henry Rhinehart, and his sister, Marie Gibson.
A funeral service will be held in his honor on July 26, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Forest Lawn - Covina Hills - Church of our Heritage, located at 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA.
Billy’s legacy lives on through the myriad of memories shared by family and friends, and he will always be remembered for the joy and love and laughter he brought into their lives.
