Bienvenido Custodio Jose

April 9, 1936 — May 20, 2019

Bienvenido "Bining" Custodio Jose passed away peacefully on Monday early morning May 20, 2019 at the age of 83 in Glendale, California surrounded by his close family and loved ones.

Bining was born in Malolos, Bulacan, Philippines on April 9, 1936. He was a beloved son of businessowners Jacinto and Julia Jose and the youngest of seven siblings. He went to Malolos Central Elementary School and Caingin Elementary School, a primary school his father helped establish in his town of Malolos. He attended Marcelo H. del Pilar High School and graduated from University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila with Political Science and Commerce/Accounting degrees. After college, he taught at a Catholic school in Batangas for a year before landing a job at the United States Veterans Administration (USVA) regional office at the US Embassy in Manila. Much like his father, Bining was very interested in public service, law and politics. He was highly involved in his community and was an active member of the Sangguniang Nayon/Local Legislative Council of Caingin, Malolos, Bulacan for several years. He played basketball and coached the local community basketball team and USVA Office basketball team.

Bining worked for the USVA Finance Division for 23 years and received various performance achievement awards. Having worked for the US government for over two decades, he was able to retire in 1986 and received a special immigrant visa to migrate to the United States. Although it was a difficult decision for him to leave his home, relatives, friends and career in the Philippines to move to the United States, it was more difficult for him to see his children grow up in unstable political and economic conditions the Philippines was experiencing particularly during that time. In July 1987, he moved to Los Angeles, California with his wife and three children, and received US Citizenship five years later. After many adjustments, sacrifices and hard work living in a new country, he and his family overcame obstacles, challenges and remained resilient. He lived in Silver Lake area and Glendale in Los Angeles with his family and continued to work in finance and accounting fields primarily in Downtown Los Angeles. He fully retired in 2000 and enjoyed the fruits of his retirement by spending time with his family and doing what he loved most: gardening, reading, writing, traveling, making hand-carved wood puzzles, repairing and doing minor construction in his homes, and more.

Bining was a responsible, loving and caring husband, a good provider who always tried to meet the needs of his family and a wonderful grandfather. He was always proud of his three children's education, achievements and endeavors who have worked for The Walt Disney Company, NBC, Mattel, Los Angeles Times, UCLA Anderson School of Management, Los Angeles County MTA/Metro and California Community Colleges. His children describe him as a great father – kind, strong, driven, active, affectionate, inspirational, a jack of all trades, a teacher of life and more.

Bining is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rufina C. Jose, his three children Anna, Agnes, and Abner, his grandchildren Julia and Lukas , and his sons-in-law Louis and Paul. He will be missed dearly and his spirit, spark, smile, laugh, energy, character, jokes and wonderful memories will be remembered and celebrated always by those who loved him.

Please join his family and friends to celebrate and remember his life:
