Danville NH: Bernard E. "Bernie" Rumery, Jr., 85, a longtime resident of Danville, died Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, NH, following a period of declining health.

Born in Haverhill, MA son of the late Bernard E. and Irene (Collins) Rumery, he was raised in Danville, educated in the local school system and graduated the former Sanborn Seminary with the Class of 1947. Mr. Rumery served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Army of Occupation following World War Two and later served during the Korean Conflict in Company "C" at the Headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur. He was a recipient of the German Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal.

Employed as a young man, first on the family poultry farm, Mr. Rumery received his Associates Degree in Agriculture from the University of New Hampshire.

He later established Rumery Realty and Arbor Homes Sales with his wife Mary, building many homes in the Merrimack Valley. They later built and ran Heidi's Drive-In on Route 125 in Plaistow from 1969 until 1979, specializing in fried chicken and seafood. He ended his work career at the John Hancock Insurance Agency in Haverhill, where he had been employed for many years.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Danville and a twenty-one year member of the the American Legion Post 15 of Danville.

An avid Red Sox fan he enjoyed spending his retirement at his summer home in Ossipee and winters in Florida. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, especially to his Army reunions, and following politics. He will long be remembered for his accomplished harmonica playing and the many enjoyable stories he could tell.

Predeceased in 2008 by his wife of fifty-four years, Mary A. (Hanley) Rumery, he leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Rose Rumery and grandchildren Emily Rumery and Derek Rumery, all of Wolfeboro, a daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Kevin McPhelim of Freeport, Maine, and his many friends and his extended family at Mountain View Community Center in Ossipee.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration and funeral service on Friday July 24, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Danville, with burial and military honors following at Center Cemetery. At the conclusion of burial services, the family will receive friends and relatives at a reception in the church hall. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Lakes Region Humane Society, 11 Old Route 28, Ossipee, NH, 03846.
