A life well lived by a man well loved

A beloved father, husband, educator and role model passed away July 7th 2026. Bernard A. Goetz, age 95 died peacefully at home in Cathedral City, California.

“Bernie” to his many friends, or affectionately called “Man Man” by those closest to him, had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. He was born June 24, 1931, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Ben and Mathilda Goetz. He shared a beautiful 64-year marriage with his wife Marcy, his high school sweetheart and steadfast partner in life. He was preceded in death by his parents, several siblings and his beloved Marcy.

A man of faith, quiet integrity and unwavering principles, he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning home, he devoted more than four decades to education, teaching physics, biology, drafting, and mechanical arts. He was the kind of teacher who changed lives and former students often spoke of the transformative effect he had on their lives, many seeking him out years later to thank him for believing in them and inspiring their futures.

A gifted athlete, Bernie set aside sports and personal pursuits to devote himself to his family. He embodied the work ethic of his generation, working multiple jobs without complaint to provide a stable, loving home for his family. His interests and needs were always secondary to the needs of others.

Blessed with the mind of an engineer and the hands of a craftsman, Bernie could build or repair anything, but it was not his talents that defined him most, but rather his humility, patience and quiet kindness. He was affable and kind to all and people were drawn to his gentle nature. He treated every person with respect, asked for little, gave generously, and led by example. His life reminds us that greatness is measured not by recognition, but by the lives we touch. His legacy of humility, perseverance, work ethic and kindness will be carried forward by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his 5 children Stewart, Dean, Maureen, Laurel and Kathleen, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, all of whom are blessed to have had him as a role model.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held October 20th, 2026, the birthday of his beloved Marcy, at 11:30 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Cathedral City, California. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those wishing to honor Bernie’s memory to make a donation to the charity of their choice, reflecting the kindness and compassion by which he lived every day.
