Bernabe Hipolito Roque, age 87, of Walnut, California, passed away peacefully on August 26th, 2025 at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Baldwin Park, California. He lived a life marked by love, faith and humor, and will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend & companion. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Bernabe was born on June 11th, 1938 in Pampanga, Philippines, the son of Maria and Domingo Roque. Growing up surrounded by a total of 6 brothers and sisters, he learned the importance of sharing, supporting one another, and finding joy in simple moments together. His upbringing shaped his belief that family and community are the most important foundations of a meaningful life.
Bernabe built his career serving in the United States Navy, starting at the age of 18. He proudly dedicated 22 years of his life to his country, spending countless hours on naval ships and submarines. He completed his full duty and retired as a Chief Petty Officer E7 (the highest level being E8) at the age of 40.
In 1968, he married Violeta Ramirez Roque, and together they shared 57 memorable years of partnership filled with laughter, devotion, and adventure. He was the proud parent of Bernabe Jr. and Tracy, and the beloved grandfather of Justin, Jaelyn, Tyler, and Abbee. To his family, he was more than just a provider – he was a source of wisdom, a giver who always put others before himself, and the family’s guiding north star.
In his free time, Bernabe enjoyed fishing at the pier, tending his garden, bowling with friends, and cooking & grilling for his loved ones. He loved watching television and would actively participate in his favorite game shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Bernabe was also a sports fanatic, always cheering on the Lakers, Dodgers, Chargers, and Stephen Curry. Friends and loved ones will always recall his sharpness and wit, his gift for compelling storytelling, and most importantly, his ability to make anyone laugh.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, perseverance, and faith, and the many lives he touched are proof of the difference he made while on this Earth. His approach to life always reminded us to enjoy the simple things, always think of others, and to just be yourself.
Though he is no longer with us, the spirit of his kindness, the warmness of his laughter, and the depth of his love will remain with all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be missed, but his legacy will never fade.
