Benjamin Cayabyab Baysic was born and raised in Pasay City, Philippines on February 25, 1937. He was the third child out of five, to his parents Francisco Baysic and Anday Cayabyab Baysic. He attended Mapua Institute of Technology and in 1960 obtained a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
Benjamin met his future wife Emerita "Tita" Roque at a baptismal party of Tita's co-teacher and they dated for four years until they got married on June 16, 1968, in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, Philippines. A few years later he immigrated to the United States in 1971. His wife, Tita, followed shortly thereafter and by 1974 his two young daughters (Evangeline and Emeben) who were born in the Philippines also immigrated to the United States to be reunited with their father and mother. Once in the U.S., they had a 3rd child, a son (Benedict). They lived in Culver City, California for a few years, until they settled in Cerritos, California in 1978. This was where Benjamin and Tita raised their children and made many life-long friends.
Professionally, Benjamin had ventured into different facets of engineering, including as a mechanical engineer, a piping designer engineer, a drafting technician, and then as a construction estimator engineer. He worked for the Flour Corporation, Ralph M. Parsons Engineering firm, and the City Hall of Los Angeles, where he retired from after working there for 25 years.
For many years Ben was an active member of the Nine Families of Santo Nino Prayer Group, the San Carlenians Association, and the Knights of Columbus at St. Linus Catholic Church, where he also served as a reader.
In his free time Ben enjoyed singing to his wife, telling dad-jokes, and performing do-it-yourself repairs around the house. To make ends meet, he worked on the weekends consulting and designing pipelines for other companies to bring in extra money. His favorite past-time was watching action movies whether it be at home on his TV or on the big screen at the local movie theater. He enjoyed eating all types of Filipino foods and desserts and later burned all those calories off by walking long distances. Later, when dad slowed down physically, you would see him endlessly scratching away at all types of lotto tickets and playing slot machines at the casinos. He always believed he would hit the lotto one day and get winning numbers on the slot machines. Perhaps he didn't in the end, but he enjoyed the fun along the way.
Ben was thoughtful and the ultimate provider. His commitment to his family and faith was unwavering. He dedicated every waking moment to his family and did so with humility, perseverance, and quiet love. If anyone asked for his assistance, he was always so quick to respond and help.
Ben was happily married to Tita for 54 years, as they had vowed to each other "until death do us part." He passed away peacefully at 8:52 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Lakewood, California, with his wife and 3 children by his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Tita; his two daughters, Evangeline and Emeben; his son, Benedict; his son-in-law, Noel Vales; his two grandchildren, Calista and Apolo Baysic Vales; and his sister in the Philippines - Julita Baysic Molina. Ben will be so missed by his friends and loved ones. May he rest in eternal paradise.
