After almost a year of fiercely battling pancreatic cancer, our beloved mother passed away in the intensive care unit at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center surrounded by her loved ones. Mamá was born in Torreón, Coahuila, to Arturo and Beatriz Vargas. She was the youngest of five children and the only daughter. At age 16, she moved to Mexico City to play major league basketball. It was there in 1966 that she met fellow basketball player, Ismael Rueda. They were married in 1975 and moved to Los Angeles that same year. Whether she was focused on raising her children, selling Avon door-to-door, toiling as a domestic worker, or working as a cashier for Rite Aid Pharmacy, Mamá approached each day with a zest for life that inspired awe and admiration from everyone she encountered. She became confidante, surrogate mother, and mentor to innumerable coworkers and friends who quickly became friends-like-family. Mamá's naughty sense of humor, optimism, energy, and consejos will be missed by all who had the honor of loving her and being loved in return. She was a dedicated and selfless wife, mother, and daughter, whose greatest pride came from seeing her children through university educations and caring for her mother, who lived with us for over twenty years and predeceased Mamá by a mere eight months. Mamá is survived by her husband Ismael Rueda and their four children: Eréndira, Marcela, Samuel, and her youngest daughter and namesake, Beatriz.

The Rueda family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the oncologists and nurses at City of Hope in South Pasadena, the palliative care specialist and his team, as well as the Spanish language support services provided by Cancer Support Community in Pasadena. We will be forever grateful for the collective efforts of the health care professionals, family, and friends who supported us, loved us, fed us, and facilitated the beautiful moments that we shared as a family in the last year. Mamá resided in Alhambra, California, at the time of her passing and would have been 64 on March 17th.

A celebration of Mamá's life will be held on Saturday, March 15 beginning with a Visitation at 10:30 am and a church service at 3:00 pm, both at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, California. We invite everyone to share in the celebration with us but ask that no one wear black. Mamá was explicit about this wish and the Rueda family would like everyone to wear bright colors in remembrance of her spirited optimism and love of life. Following the services at Forest Lawn, we will open up our home for those who would like to continue accompanying us in the celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Cancer Support Community Pasadena. http://www.cscpasadena.org/ways-to-help/donate-now

Beatriz Rueda
