Azucena Magpuri Castillo

Azucena Magpuri Castillo, 82, died peacefully surrounded by her family at home in Los Angeles on December 11. Born on September 8, 1939, in Cavite, Philippines, Susie moved to the United States in 1967.


A graduate of the College of Public Health at the University of the Philippines, Susie worked as a Clinical Lab Scientist at the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Like a second mother to her seven siblings, Susie was devoted to her family and community. She led by example through her generosity, thoughtfulness, and integrity. Quick to laugh, Susie was a welcoming host as famous for her arroz valenciana, leche flan, and egg pies as her bright smile. She loved to dance and delighted her grandchildren with Filipino folk songs.


Azucena is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jose, son, Joseph (Jessica), two grandchildren, siblings Cesar, Sor Ana - OP, Lucy (Larry), Robert, Nora (David), and Perpetua. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Natividad Magpuri, and her brother Romeo.
