At the age of 3 1⁄2 years old, Avis, her siblings and her parents moved from Louisiana to California and stayed with Elva's Parents Lennox and Leona Baxter. They lived on the 3rd floor of this Gorgeous Big House. Some would call this a mini Mansion. Elva and Richard Sr. were looking for a place of their own and found a home on Concord street in the city of Pomona, California. They new this was the home for their family. Avis, Richard and Jay would sing this song " Swim Swim Swim in the Summertime" it was a cute, fun song, but it was obvious these children wanted a home with a pool and that's exactly what their parents purchased. In 1964 when Avis was 10 years old, they made it official and moved to their new home on Concord Street.
When Avis was 12 years of age, she was Baptized and Saved at Greater Goodwill Church of God and Christ. Other parents of the church was so impressed with Avis that they would have their children sit next to Avis in church. "There's nothing like positive influence.
Avis graduated from Ganesha High School in 1970, she later married Albert Blake and was blessed with three beautiful children. Albert Raphael Blake, Letitia Oriel Blake and Juane Trinette Blake. In her early 20's Avis was diagnosed with Diabetes that continued to be her struggle with complications following her later in the years. No matter what, Avis kept her chin up and always stayed in good spirits. In 1980 Avis began her working career at Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical. In 1981 Avis and her children moved to San Diego. Avis enjoyed outdoors with her children, one of their first adventures was to The San Diego Zoo. In 1988 Avis became a
grandmother for the first time to Kevin, Nae Nae's first born child. Avis had many hobbies such as Camping, she loved roller coaster rides, she got Vaunchaa to get over his fears of Roller Coasters, she taught Kevin how to swim, she and auntie Vicki would sew clothes for the kids sometimes. Avis loved to travel as a matter of fact while taking a little break from the hospital in between her sickness she took some of her grandbabies to Santa Barbara.
Throughout everything Avis was very ambitious, focused and determined. Avis recognized her talents to write and be creative, her first book "Celebration" published October 18, 1993. 2nd Book was a compilation with other poets called "Perception". Her prints are found on Pages 55, 157 & 167. Avis's latest creative project "Fruitful Success", this would be her last book, however you can find these books in the San Diego Library or Barnes and Nobles. In 2000 she moved to Riverside. On Saturday March 23rd, 2013 God called his daughter Avis home.
In closing, Avis truly believed in Family. She was 100% supportive and truly stayed interactive in Family Reunions, family gatherings, you name she was there.
