Avelino Rufo Solomon, 90, died peacefully at home on July 23, 2012, in Cerritos, CA, with his family by his side.
Avelino was born on November 10, 1921 in Urbiztondo, Pangasinan, Philippines to Epifanio Solomon and Tomasina Rufo. Before beginning his long career in the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation, Avelino served proudly in World War II in the Philippine Army / United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) from 1941 to 1946, and he was one of the last remaining survivors of the infamous Bataan Death March.
Avelino married his beloved wife, Juliana Vergara Solomon in 1944, and they raised four amazing children in Tondo, Manila. Avelino and Juliana were happily married for over 63 years before Juliana's passing four years ago. In 1971, Avelino and Juliana immigrated to the United States, following their four children, but their hearts never left the Philippines and the relatives they left behind. Avelino was a devoted husband, father, and friend, and he was our beloved Lolo, and he will always be remembered for his strength, loyalty, compassion, and devotion to his family and friends.
Avelino is survived by his children, son Avelino Solomon Jr., daughter Julie Solomon, daughter Flora Bulos and son-in-law Nep Bulos, grandchildren Arnold Bulos, Arlene Kamppila, Avelino Solomon III, and Avel Solomon, and great-grandchildren Celeste Kamppila, and Jiselle Kamppila, and many many "adopted" grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family stateside and in the Philippines. Avelino was preceded in death by his beloved wife Juliana Vergara Solomon, his daughter Celia Solomon, and his daughter-in-law Ofelia Solomon.
Viewing will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 11:00am to 9:00pm. Prayer Vigil will be held at the Church of our Fathers Forest Lawn Cypress on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 28, at 1:30pm at Holy Family Catholic Church in Artesia, California. Internment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress, California, with reception to follow at 17408 S. Alora Avenue, Cerritos, California.
