Tilton, NH: Anthony "Tony" Ferranti passed away peacefully December 18, 2013, at age 91. He had recently been a resident at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton NH. Prior to that time, he had lived for many years in Hampstead NH, including a time living with his daughter Marann, son-in-law Hal, and his three grandsons who affectionately called him "Poppy".
Born in East Boston, and living many years in Somerville, MA, Tony was one of ten children. He left school as a youngster to work to help support his mother and siblings as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in both the European and Pacific theatres. Tony worked in the building and demolition of bridges with the 398 Engineers in Europe and landed at Normandy following the D-Day Invasion. He later served in the 1301st Engineers Regiment in the Pacific. His decorations and citations included the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. Tony was honorably discharged in February of 1946.
Following his honorable discharge from the service, he met and married his loving and devoted wife of over 63 years, Jacqueline (Moschella) Ferranti, who passed away September 1, 2009. Together they raised three children who survived them.
Tony worked many years as a warehouseman for First National Stores in Somerville, and later as a maintenance worker with the US Postal Service, until his retirement.
In 1990, the City of Somerville ceremoniously honored Tony and several other WWII veterans who had left school to fight for their country, with honorary Somerville High School Diplomas. Tony was a member of the DAV, and a Member of the Hampstead VFW Post 11524.
Tony is survived by his daughter Marann and son-in-law Hal, son Joseph and his late wife Maria, and son Paul; three grandsons David, Elijah, and Nathaniel Anthony; his sister Anna Nunziato; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Josephine, Gussie, Yolanda (Terry), and Tesse, and his brother John.
Relatives and friends may call on Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 10 to 1 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2 p.m. at Rockingham Church, 90 Newton Rd, Route 108, Plaistow. Burial with military honors will be held at a later date in the State of New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Tony's name may be made to the NH Veterans Home or other veterans charitable organizations.
