Anne Bowers Waggoner, Born in Lorain, Ohio, April 16, 1920. A graduate of Lorain High School in 1938. She received an A.B. degree with a major in Latin from Oberlin College in 1942, and received an M.A. degree in English from Northwestern University in 1947. In 1951 married Jack Holmes Waggoner Jr. in Riverside, California, and moved with her husband to Claremont, where she lived until her death on January 17, 2013. Mrs. Waggoner's teaching career spanned 40 years with eleven years teaching English at Whittier Junior High School in Lorain, Ohio; eight years teaching English at Polytechnic High School in Riverside, California; and twenty-one years teaching English at Claremont High School in Claremont, California. In 1972 she received a "Teacher-of-the Year" award from Claremont High School and retired in 1982. Since retirement, Mrs. Waggoner was active in the following organizations: Claremont United Church of Christ, Congregational, where she served for many years on the Chancel Committee. Volunteer Vital English, where she served on the Board of Directors. Rembrandt Club of Pomona College, for which she organized bus trips to art museums for four years. Delta Kappa Gamma, an international teachers organization, for which she held several different offices and a number of committee chairmanships in the local chapter. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Pomona Valley, for which she wrote/edited the monthly newsletter for many years. Mrs. Waggoner is survived by her husband Jack; her nephew, John Stringfellow, of Downey, California; her sister-in-law, Marylou Nack of Columbus, Ohio; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chandler and Judith Waggoner, of Carmel, Indiana; and brother-in-law, Harvey Wahls, of Raleigh, North Carolina. A private burial will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Covina Hills. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Waggoner may be made to Claremont United Church of Christ, Congregational 233 Harrison Ave., Claremont, CA 91711, or the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Pomona Valley, P.O. Box 537, Claremont, CA 91711.
