Anna Newkirk Young (Ann, Annie)
Born March 25, 1934 in the District of Columbia, U.S.A.
Died April 18, 2019 at age 85 in Torrance, CA
She was her parent's only child. After her mother died of cancer when she was two years old, she was raised as a "Military Brat" wherever her Father was stationed. She graduated High School in Texas.
After living in Salinas, CA, she relocated to Southern California living with her Aunt for some time in Hollywood, CA.
Ann met her long-time friend, Kay in 1955 when both were working at Shell Oil Co. in the Steno Pool. Ann sat right behind Kay in that vast room of women working.
Ann married Ron Arzt and they spent many weekends with Kay and her husband Jerry cooking dinners for each other and playing card games. They became close friends.
Ann and Ron both loved German Shepherds and showed one or two of their dogs during their marriage. Ann's next job was with Erwin-Wasey, an advertising firm and her main account was the Carnation Company.
Ann and Ron later moved to Bakersfield but the marriage ended in divorce. Ann attended college in Bakersfield and graduated with a bachelor's degree.
She returned to the L.A. area for better career opportunities and lived with Kay and Jerry for a while so she could find new employment in L.A. and get back on her feet after the divorce. She then went to work for Princess Cruises and lived in a small apartment in Hollywood, and later purchased her own home.
She sold her house and purchased a condominium in Burbank, CA ironically the same condo building where musician and former teacher, Graham Young lived. After the death of Graham's wife of over 30 years, they met, fell in love and married on August 3, 1980.
Graham and his family were blessed to know many of Ann's kind and fun friends. Her friends Bobbie and Carlene, their mother Sarah and sister, Sally were extra special. They were fun to be with, loved music, and visited Grahams mother, May Young, when she was in a nursing home.
Graham and Ann enjoyed travel and toured Australia, Europe, Africa, China, Japan to name a few. Graham's daughter, Kathy remembers when Ann gifted her family with a cruise to Mexico and also to Alaska that are remembered as wonderful highlights. She was generous with Graham's daughter Patty as well as they traveled to Costa Rica and the Northeastern states for fall foliage.
The couple moved to Long Beach, CA and later bought a house in Cypress, CA where their parties and holiday gatherings were fun for friends and family. Ann often said she wanted "Happys" saying about a good time, "It was a Happy" or a sad or disappointment as, "Not a Happy."
Ann managed the band Graham played in on the Queen Mary. She was an excellent manager.
After Graham died in 1998 Ann planned a fun life living at Walnut Village, a luxury retirement community where she made new friends and enjoyed many activities. She wrote the monthly publication of the goings on at The Village.
In July of 2018 Ann moved to a care facility in Torrance, CA due to ill health. Although she received excellent compassionate care there it was not a "Happy" for her.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, and dear longtime friends Bobbie and Carlene.
Ann is survived by step-daughters Patty Young and Kathy Carder, step son-in-law Foster Carder, step-grandchildren Dora and Graham Carder and wife Tiffany Carder, Poppy Elizabeth and husband Jeff Carver, and great grandson Christian as well as close friends Kay, Judy, Joanie, Deanne to name a few..
