Anita Rubenia Sanchez

Anita Rubenia Sánchez nació el 31 de agosto de 1924 en Orocuina, Choluteca, Honduras. Aunque nació durante la Gran Depresión, “Mamita”, como la conocían familiares y amigos, ejemplificaba una vida de trabajo duro, superando la pobreza y sin miedo a las dificultades que enfrentaba la vida. Trabajó como empleada doméstica en Honduras y crió a sus hijos con fe en Dios, el valor del trabajo, humildad y agradecimiento. En 1972 emigró a Estados Unidos para ayudar a su hija Leticia a criar a su familia. Con mucho sacrificio, Leticia compró una casa y esto le dio a Mamita la libertad de regresar a Honduras. En 1976 regresó a Estados Unidos y se unió an ella su hijo Rafael. La familia se unió en busca de fortaleza y una vida mejor. 

Mamita amaba los Estados Unidos y estaba increíblemente agradecida de vivir en este país. A los 80 años, después de semanas de estudio y cierta ansiedad, aprobó con orgullo el examen y se convirtió en ciudadana. 

También estaba muy orgullosa de que sus cuatro hijos se convirtieran en propietarios de su casa. Citaba frecuentemente a Leticia: “en una casa alquilada no se puede poner ni un solo clavo sin el permiso del dueño”. 

Mamita era una madre y abuela cariñosa y generosa que cuidaba de muchos niños, incluidos muchos de los “chamacos” del barrio. Sólo el Señor sabe cuántos pañales cambiaron sus manos.

Mamita nunca tuvo un día de “vacaciones”. Desde primera hora de la mañana se levantaba con las gallinas, barría, limpiaba, cosía, cocinaba, lavaba, trabajaba en el jardín y cuidaba a sus animales. Su trabajo nunca se detuvo. Sin embargo, ella era más feliz rodeada de personas que amaba. Siempre tenía tiempo para recibir a cualquiera que la visitara y rápidamente ofrecía “pan dulce con café”. Nos encantaba comer su yuca con chicarrón y curtido, sus tamales y sus plátanos fritos. Hizo espomillas y charamuscas para su Jeffrey, su primer nieto con quien compartía un vínculo especial. 

También siempre tuvo tiempo para hacer sus llamadas telefónicas. Sus llamadas vendrían para regalar limones, comida y otros artículos diversos. Esta es la señora que lo tenía todo y te lo daría… siempre que pudiera encontrarlo. Cuando no la habíamos visitado, su mensaje telefónico preguntándonos si todavía estábamos vivos o muertos, le hacía saber que estaba en “problemas”. Sin embargo, ella nunca quedó molesta y todo se le perdonó con un abrazo.

Siempre recordaremos su mente aguda y el “refran o dicho” que compartía. Aunque solo recibió educación hasta el tercer grado , su sabiduría enriqueció nuestras vidas.

Mamita era más feliz viviendo su vida al servicio de los demás. Sabía la ubicación de cada sorteo de comida gratis en el vecindario cualquier día de la semana. Se aseguro su lugar en la fila, empacaba sus productos en su carrito y los entregaba a personas más jóvenes y con menos capacidades físicas del vecindario. Mamita hacía amigos dondequiera que iba, así que siempre tenía algo que dejar.

A sus 91 años su salud empeoró y fue atendida en el Glendale Memorial Hospital (2016-2020), en las casas de Frederick Boek (2020-22), Rafael Sánchez y José y Clara Sánchez (2022). Finalmente, en agosto de 2023, debido al deterioro de su salud, vivió sus últimos días en la casa de José y Clara Sánchez hasta su muerte el 14 de junio de 2024 a la avanzada edad de 99 años.

Amaba a sus hijos, Leticia Ondina, Gabriel, José Antonio y José Rafael. Adoraba a sus nietos Jeffrey (Lydia), Helen y Ana Boek, Nely (Juan José Álvarez) y José Antonio Sánchez y a sus bisnietos Jacqueline (Zurich Lewis) y Justine Boek, Tiffany y Randy Salazar, Gianna, Alyssa y Julie Alvarez.

Más recientemente, su tataranieta, Vera Lewis, “la de ojos azules”, derritió su corazón. Hay un lugar especial en el cielo para ella. Fue mama, abuela, bisabuela y tatarabuela. Ella agrado la vida de muchos para siempre. La recordamos por su corazón y sus acciones generosas.

Mamita se ha ido a casa para estar con el Señor. Ahora se reencuentra con su madre, “Mamita Cándida” y su hija, Leticia. Ella siempre será recordada en nuestros corazones.

Anita Rubenia Sanchez was born on August 31, 1924 in Orocuina, Choluteca, Honduras. Although she was born during the Great Depression, “Mamita,” as she was known by family and friends, exemplified a life of hard work, rising above poverty and not being afraid of the difficulties faced in life. She worked as a domestic worker in Honduras and raised her children with faith in God, the value of work, humility and gratefulness. In 1972, she emigrated to the United States to help her daughter Leticia raise her family. With much sacrifice, Leticia purchased a home and this gave Mamita the freedom to return to Honduras. In 1976, she returned to the United States and her son Rafael joined her. The family united as one for strength and a better life.

Mamita loved the United States and was incredibly grateful to live in this country. In her 80s, after weeks of studying and some anxiety, she proudly passed the exam and became a citizen.

She was also extremely proud that her four children became home-owners. She often quoted Leticia, “in a rented house, not even one nail can be put in without the owner’s permission”.

Mamita was a loving, generous mother and grandmother who cared for so many children, including many of the “chamacos” from the neighborhood. Only the Lord knows how many diapers her hands changed.

Mamita never had a “vacation” day. From early morning, she was up with the chickens, sweeping, cleaning, sewing, cooking, washing, gardening and tending to her animals. Her work never stopped. However, she was happiest surrounded by people she loved. 

She always had time to welcome any one that visited, quickly offering “pan dulce con café”. We loved to eat her yucca con chicarron y curtido, her tamales and her platano fritos. She made espomillas and charamuscas for her Jeffrey, her first grandson with whom she shared a special bond.

She also always had time to make her phone calls. Her calls were to come for lemons, food and other various sundries. This is the lady who had everything and would give it to you… as long as she could find it. When we had not visited, her phone message asking if we were still alive or dead, would let you know you were in “hot water”. However, she never stayed upset and all was forgiven with a hug.

We will always remember her sharp mind and the “refran or dicho” that she shared. Although only educated to the 3rd grade, her wisdom enriched our lives.

Mamita was happiest living her life in service to others. She knew the location of every free food giveaway in the neighborhood on any day of the week. Securing her place in line, she’d pack her goods off in her cart, dropping them off to younger less-abled bodied folks in neighborhood. Mamita made friends wherever she went so she always had a drop-off to make.

At 91 years old, her health declined and she was cared for at the Glendale Memorial Hospital (2016-2020), in the homes of Frederick Boek (2020-22), Rafael Sanchez and Jose and Clara Sanchez (2022). Finally, in August 2023, due to her declining health, she lived out her final days in the home of Jose and Clara Sanchez until her death on June 14, 2024 at the ripe old age of 99.

She cherished her children, Leticia Ondina, Gabriel, Jose Antonio and Jose Rafael.

She adored her grandchildren Jeffrey (Lydia), Helen, and Ana Boek, Nely (Juan Jose Alvarez), and Jose Antonio Sanchez and her great-grandchildren Jacqueline (Zurich Lewis) and Justine Boek, Tiffany and Randy Salazar, Gianna, Alyssa and Julie Alvarez.

Most recently, her great-great-grandchild,Vera Lewis, “the blue-eyed one” melted her heart.

There is a special place in heaven for her. She was a great mother, grandmother, great-

grandmother and great-great grandmother. She affected the lives of many for good. We remember her for her generous heart and actions.

Mamita has gone home to be with the Lord. She is now reunited with her mother, “Mamita Candida” and her daughter, Leticia. She will always be remembered in our hearts.

Anita Sanchez, 99, born on August 31, 1924, passed away June 14, 2024. She resided in Fontana, CA at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Glendale, CA.
