Angela Montes

 Our beloved mother Angela Manuela Montes, known to all as Melo, was born in Zacatecas, Mexico on March 30, 1947

to Gonzalo and Paula Salas. At the age of 19 her mother passed away, leaving her as the oldest child to care for and look after her three sisters Eualia, Teresa, and Rafaela and two brothers, Joel and Jesus. She was devoted to helping her family through courage and above all faith. At the age of 20 she married Jesus Montes and soon after gave birth to her first child Concepcion, who unfortunately passed away at the age of one. Soon after Baltazar was born followed by Socorro a year and a half later. Her husband Jesus left for the US to provide a better life for them leaving her alone in Mexico with her two young children. Using her faith and courage to keep her going, she came to the US to reunite with her husband when Baltazar and Socorro were five and four years old respectively. Soon after she reunited with her husband, Efren was born and Pablo followed one year later. She raised her family in Echo Park, which at the time was a very challenging neighborhood. Through her faith and positive parenting, she successfully raised all four of her children to be respectful and have the same faith in God as she did. She lived a humble and selfless life. She was the kindest person you could meet. You never heard her say anything negative about anyone and always prayed for everyone she knew. You couldn’t leave her house without having a meal and some food to go. She not only raised her own children but babysat many children whom she taught the same values as her own children.

Besides being a devout mother and wife, her other passion was to serve God and her church. She volunteered in San Conrado Church for many years where she was a Guadalupana. She went to her prayer group weekly and on Saturdays she helped prepare food to be sold at the church on Sundays after mass. She always welcomed people into her home and made the most delicious food. She would cook for the members of the seminary, the homeless, family members, friends, and neighbors. She moved to Azusa after living more than 40 years in Echo Park. The last few years of her life, she struggled with a lot of serious health issues, but was always resilient, never complained, and continued to rely on her faith to get through her illness.

She leaves us all with fond memories. We will always honor her memory and continue with her legacy of kindness and faith. We will always love one another just as she taught us and we will take care of each other forever. May she rest in peace.

Nuestra querida madre, Ángela Manuela Montes, conocida por todos como Melo, nació en Zacatecas, México, el 30 de marzo de 1947, hija de Gonzalo y Paula Salas. A los 19 años, su madre falleció, dejándola como la hija mayor al cuidado de sus tres hermanas: Eualia, Teresa y Rafaela, y sus dos hermanos: Joel y Jesús. Se dedicó a ayudar a su familia con valentía y, sobre todo, con fe. A los 20 años se casó con Jesús Montes y poco después dio a luz a su primera hija, Concepción, quien lamentablemente falleció a la edad de un año. Poco después nació Baltazar, seguido de Socorro un año y medio después. Su esposo, Jesús, se fue a Estados Unidos para brindarles una vida mejor, dejándola sola en México con sus dos hijos pequeños. Con su fe y valentía, llegó a Estados Unidos para reunirse con su esposo cuando Baltazar y Socorro tenían cinco y cuatro años, respectivamente. Poco después de reunirse con su esposo, nació Efrén y Pablo un año después. Crió a su familia en Echo Park, un barrio muy difícil en aquel entonces. Gracias a su fe y a una crianza positiva, logró criar a sus cuatro hijos para que fueran respetuosos y tuvieran la misma fe en Dios que ella. Vivió una vida humilde y desinteresada. Era la persona más amable que se pudiera conocer. Nunca se le oía decir nada negativo sobre nadie y siempre oraba por todos sus conocidos. No se podía salir de su casa sin tener comida y algo para llevar. No solo crió a sus propios hijos, sino que también cuidó a muchos otros niños a quienes les enseñó los mismos valores que a los suyos.

Además de ser una madre y esposa devota, su otra pasión era servir a Dios y a su iglesia. Fue voluntaria en la Iglesia de San Conrado durante muchos años, donde fue guadalupana. Asistía a su grupo de oración semanalmente y los sábados ayudaba a preparar comida para vender en la iglesia los domingos después de misa. Siempre recibía a la gente en su casa y preparaba platos deliciosos. Cocinaba para los miembros del seminario, las personas sin hogar, familiares, amigos y vecinos. Se mudó a Azusa después de vivir más de 40 años en Echo Park. Durante los últimos años de su vida, luchó con muchos problemas de salud graves, pero siempre fue resiliente, nunca se quejó y siguió confiando en su fe para superar su enfermedad.

Nos deja a todos con gratos recuerdos. Siempre honraremos su memoria y continuaremos con su legado de bondad y fe. Siempre nos amaremos como ella nos enseñó y nos cuidaremos mutuamente para siempre. Que descanse en paz.
