Alvin Sheldon Weaver

June 29, 1918 — January 13, 2013

Wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all who knew him, Al Weaver went to be with his Lord at the age of 94. He joins his beloved wife, Betty Jane, who predeceased him January 23, 2009. A respected member and leader of his church, Al loved serving his Lord, and the special joy he shared with his family and friends throughout his life.

Al was born June 29, 1918 in Scott, Saskatchewan, Canada, and immigrated to the United States with his parents, John and Clara Weaver, and younger brother Floyd (Bo) Weaver. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from John Marshal High School in 1935 where he was a member of the "Barristers" basketball team and the Engineering Honor Society. Following three years of college, Al worked as an engineer and draftsman for Northrop Aviation. During a family vacation near Balboa he met a pretty young lady named Betty Jane Foess. Al married Betty in October 1940 and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage during which they raised three children.

Al was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sherman Oaks for over 50 years. With Betty at his side, he provided positive direction to the Flagship Mariners and served in a variety of leadership roles. Al traveled the world extensively with Betty, often in the company of friends and family. He also enjoyed fishing for the "big ones" in Baja with his sons, Terry and Tim. Always handy with tools, Al built a home in Sherman Oaks that he and Betty lived in from 1952.
Al became a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department in October 1941 then served in the US Navy during World War II. Following his discharge, Al continued his career in the Fire Department and after a 34 year distinguished career retired in 1975 as Chief of Battalion 9-C.
Al is survived by daughter Margaret (Terry) Jenkins, Terry (Mary Jo) Weaver, and Tim (Diana) Weaver; two grandchildren, Melissa (Jay) Gregory and Matthew Jenkins; step grandson, Dan Cook; great grandchildren Boston and Marlee Gregory; sister-in-law, Dorothy Weaver; nephew, Casey (Pam) Weaver and their children Crystal and Coral Weaver.

Al was interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood Hills, California. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held on 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Sherman Oaks on February 9, 2013. Al's legacy is best expressed in the following words: "All my love and thanks be to God for the joy you have given to me."
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Widows, Orphans, and Disabled Firemen's Fund, 815 Colorado Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90041, and the First Presbyterian Church of Sherman Oaks, 4445 Noble, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423.
