While in the Navy he developed an interest in the medical field which lead to his enrollment in medical school. In Allen's words, "Somehow at the ripe old age of 30 I conned enough people to let me into the University of California Medical School, Irvine, California. I think it was because I was a Korean War veteran." After graduating medical school in 1966, he pursued many interests within the medical field including his own private practice. He finally settled in as an anesthesiologist. He worked at many hospitals over the years including Rio Hondo Hospital, Queen of the Valley, St. Bernardines, and Foothill Hospital.
Because of his love for policework, he volunteered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. In 1975 he successfully completed the police academy and would spend one day a month patrolling the streets of the City of Industry. His compensation was $1.00 per year.
He loved spending time and travelling with his wife Suzanne. Most vacations consisted of travelling up to Lee Vining in the high Sierra's to go fishing or pulling his boat back to Alabama and staying on lake Jordan to visit with his family. In his later years he loved to journey out to Iowa to visit his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the sunshine and spending time in the yard or in the garage working on projects. He was a master craftsman and has built some amazing furniture over the years.
The family would like to thank all of those who cared for him, visited, facetimed, and sent cards during his difficult battle with Alzheimer's.
