Alicia Gomez Obituary

Alicia Gomez was born on July 19, 1945, in Guadalajara, Jalisco to Carmen Ramirez and Pedro Castillo. She departed this life on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Los Angeles of Pulmonary Hypertension and Sjogren’s disease. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Glendale, CA.

She is survived by her children Juan, Jesus Jr., Joshua, her bonus son Ernesto.  She also leaves her grandchildren Amber, Mathew, Joshua, Jesse, and Martha.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jesus, her son Erick, and her granddaughter Isabella.  There were many others that she saw as her children: Peter, David, Nefty, Vanessa, Grisel, Veronica, Polo, Frankie, Hector, Ivan, Jaime, the entire Sichel Family, and countless others.  Alicia was a wonderful older sister to Gloria and Pepe and younger sister to Mercedes, Rosa, Pedro, Manuel, and Rosaura. Alicia has been a surrogate parent to her many siblings.  She has had so many children from Griffin Elementary and three generations of students throughout Abraham Lincoln High School who also saw her a mother.  She felt very proud of all her children, including her goddaughter, Oralia.

Our mother made it her mission to care for the sick and injured through her motherly healing abilities. Happy and Jaime can tell you all how Alicia took them in and made them stay in her home until they were ready to tackle the world.  My mother was kind, humble, and always willing to help others. She never hesitated to feed everyone, and her house was everyone’s home.  Alicia was a lover of food, she loved “Caldo de bagre,” (catfish).

Alicia was a hard worker, resilient figure in the face of adversity and person who provided exemplary effort. She worked at Anthony Macaroni’s as a packer for 15 years and as a teacher’s aide at Griffin Elementary School for 5 years.

She loved music, some of her favorites were Vicente Fernandez, Rocio Ducal, Juan Gabriel.  She also enjoyed oldies but goodies, Bob Dylan, and cumbia songs. Alicia had a life-long passion for art, painting, and illustration. She volunteered with Maria Auxiliadora and was very active in her church, serving as both choir member and part of the parish. Her heritage was also important to her. Her favorite color was red.  She enjoyed laughing, music, her family, friends, and her faith. To know Alicia is to have laughed with or to have shared a kind word, whether a close friend or stranger. Being social was a special gift upon which Alicia was bestowed; those around her were drawn to her infectious and ebullient personality.

Our mother had an unassuming and disarming smile that could put anyone at ease; from newborns to the elderly, everyone was Alicia’s friend. Her sense of humor was second to none and she was as compassionate as she was funny. Even when ill, Alicia was never angry, sad, or depressed – she could find the silver lining to keep pushing forward in any situation. Selflessness and generosity were two traits that highlighted her personality. Alicia touched the lives of so many people in such a short amount of time; she was able to accomplish much before her untimely passing.  Alicia was so special. She represented the good that we all need every day in our lives. She was one of a select few who could rise to meet challenges with a smile.  She will be missed terribly, but we will cherish the happy moments we were able to share with her.
