Alice Flores Esquer

Alice Flores Esquer peacefully entered into eternal rest at her home of 72 years in the early morning of Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020 at the age of 93, surrounded by her loving family.
Alice was born on March 29th, 1927 in El Paso, Texas. In 1935 she moved with her family to Los Angeles, CA, before coming to the Coachella Valley in 1937. Alice attended Oasis School in Oasis, as well as Lincoln and Roosevelt Schools in Indio. She worked at Cal Date for 5 years and Valley Date for 5 years as well. She also worked at Covalda Packing Company and Cardinal Distributing for 17 years. During this time, she met Alberto Cota Esquer, whom she married in 1950, and with whom she had 5 children. She was an active member of her community, serving on the Coachella City Council and as a 4-H leader for 4 years, as well as a Girl Scout leader.
In 1970, she decided to go back to school. While working in Head Start as an aide, she attended College of the Desert, receiving her high school diploma and her Associate of Arts degree in 1974. In 1975 she attended University of Redlands and received her Bachelor of Arts degree, as well as a Child Development Associate credential. In 1976 she received her Bilingual Standard Teaching Credentials from California State University, San Bernardino.
Alice was a 1st and 2nd grade bilingual teacher at Mecca School for 8 years, then transferred to Peter Pendleton where she taught for 10 years until she retired in 1994. She loved each student individually and always gave her best, taking the greatest pride in hearing each child learn to read. Her motto was "What I give to each child, I give to myself and future generations."
Alice is preceded in death by her husband, Alberto C Esquer of Indio. She is survived by her daughter, Bertha (Larry) Cooper of Fort Worth, TX, her son Albert Esquer of Coachella, her daughters Luisa Esquer of Indio, Caroline Esquer of Coachella, Helen (Hector) Gonzalez of Indio, her grandsons Troy Taylor and Bruce Smith of Fort Worth, TX, her granddaughters Tennille (Ray) Garza of La Quinta, Sarah Bent of Indio, Mia (Francisco) Velarde of San Diego, Esperanza of Indio, and Fé of Indio, and 9 great-grandchildren. She will be as missed as deeply as she was loved.
Funeral services are entrusted to Forest Lawn of Coachella. Due to COVID-19 precautions, there will be no visitation. Interment will be at Coachella Valley Public Cemetery.
