Haverhill, MA: Alfred R. Troian, Jr., 87, lifelong resident of Haverhill, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill.
Born, raised, and educated in Haverhill, son of the late Alfred J. and Alda (LaPlume) Troian, he graduated from Haverhill High School with the Class of 1944. Mr. Troian served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a plank owner of the USS Bordelon, one of several ships that he served on during the war. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Troian worked as a stereotyper and pressman first for the Worcester Telegram, then at the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, and finally at the Haverhill Gazette for thirty-nine years before his retirement.
A member of St. John the Baptist Parish, Mr. Troian served as Union Representative of the Graphics Communications International Union. He served on the Board of Trustees of Walnut Cemetery was also a member of the V.F.W Lorraine Post and the AmVets Post 147.
Mr. Troian loved working in his yard and made sure that it was always kept meticulously clean. He also enjoyed working around his home and especially enjoyed spending summers at his cottage on Sunset Lake in Hampstead, NH and boating.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Mary Adrienne (Pigeon) Troian, his son Steven A. Troian and his partner Steven J. Douglas of Somerville, his daughter and son-in-law, Linda A. and Francis L. "Hank" Hastings, three grandchildren, Keith Hastings, Kevin Hastings, and Kristine Shea, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Renaldo Troian, and sisters, Lorraine Chase, Loretta Channell, and Patrician Reardon.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday, February 17, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will begin on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 110 Lincoln Avenue, Haverhill, MA.
